With 20 days left to register by June 30, Bristol reports 2002 residents on the books for November, split 1142 men and 860 women. The Portguese American Civic League and party committees push to reach 2500 registrants as Town Clerk John W. Church expands evening hours and noon openings.
A fire at 9 West Street forces 23 residents including three children to flee. An oil stove explosion sparked the blaze as Mary Sousa, 24, emptied a two burner container signaling her husband. All escaped without injury. Fire brigades quickly contained the flames. building owned by the estate of Max Makowsky and insured.
Reverend Herbert D Graetz pastor of the first Congregational church accepts invitation to give the invocation and benediction at Cols Memorial high school commencement on June 23 in the Guiteras school auditorium. The largest class in school history will receive diplomas from Committee member I frédfo Hamill.
A committee arranging the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel meets tomorrow at 8 o'clock in the parish hall on Congregational Street to finalize plans.

The committee in charge handles entertainment invitations menu and decorations with multiple named assistants.
Bristol to raise funds for July celebration with less than four weeks left. Chairman James Fo Meigs urges every citizen to contribute what they can to cover expenses for the event. Colt Memorial High School receives a U S flag that flew over the national Capitol on Memorial Day. Principal J Fitzgerald accepted the flag from alumnus and congressman aide C J Maisano, who plans to present it at June 14 assembly if Congress is not yet adjourned.
A fire at the Bristol Yacht Club late Sunday night caused extensive damage with losses exceeding 400 dollars for new furniture and hundreds more for other items. George R. Fish and VIRB F Head discovered the blaze as they checked sewer sub stations after a storm, prompting police and a general alarm that summoned four fire units. Chief Robert J Anderson led the burn and smoke was confined to a storage area on the first floor though flames crept to the second floor via a partition. A storage locker with paint and gasoline is cited by Col Samuel A Hall as the probable ignition source. the club had just reopened after remodels and much of the new furniture was unwrapped at the time.
Bristol plans a patriotic program centered on military and naval participation. Senator Green and Congressman Forand push for a Newport Naval Station detachment and a battleship or destroyer, with Rhode Island National Guard reviews and World War I veterans involved. The two day lineup includes concerts, bonfire, parades, baseball, water battles, and fireworks with Rev Arthur Burdon as chaplain. Local officials, veterans groups, and school bands will contribute to the observance.
The Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel outlined plans for its annual church outing at a parish hall meeting on Congregational Street. The committee will coordinate with other groups for a clam bake and festival activities, with members named to lead organizing work and to cooperate with other church bodies.

William Bottomley Jr a Colt Memorial High sophomore and Student Council member has been chosen by the Rotary Club as the key sponsor for the Little Rhody Boy's State at Rhode Island State College from July 8 to July 12. The program aims to teach American government principles at local state and national levels. The movement began in Illinois and has expanded to 24 states.
The Collins and Aikman Girls' Club organizes a strawberry tea and food sale for June 18 at the club quarters Thames and Church streets. Mrs Marguerite Hill chairs the committee including Bridget Nastri Ada Perry Blanche Gladue Emma Sousa Emily Middleton Mae Canning Laura Sai and Irene Lewis.

The sixth annual Cotton Charity Ball by the Bristol Portuguese American Women's Civic League will be held Friday at the Casino on Hope Street with Rhode Island officials and regional groups expected. The Holy Rosary Sodality strawberry festival follows Saturday at Italian American Hall on Hope Street, drawing a capacity crowd.
The English Boy Choristers performed evensong at St Michael's Church last Saturday evening drawing hundreds of worshippers and near full pews. The author notes such a turnout could boost attendance in churches nationwide if replicated.
