Buddies Bundle Comm Gives $100 to Book Fund

The Bristol Buddies Bundle Committee donates 100 to the U S State Library Book Pool for the Armed Forces. The funds, from a small treasury balance, will purchase books for Bristol men in service and for Naval Hospital patients in Newport, continuing wartime support.

Salvation Army Bristol Service Fund Report

The Salvation Army Bristol Service Fund, run by a volunteer committee led by Robert W. Nelson, provides local aid with no red tape. Funds, stored at the Bristol Branch of the Industrial Trust Co, support clothing, fuel, medical care, and other needs, with examples from other communities including school meals and dental care. Members include Nelson as chair, Wood as treasurer, Martha Graham, and Anna D. Callan.

Factory Outing Scheduled by US Rubber Employees Association

The US Rubber Employees Association annual outing will be held Saturday at Lincoln Park. More than a thousand people including employees and families are expected for a clambake or turkey dinner and a sports program starting at 10 30 a.m. A ball game, races and a tug of war are planned with prizes for winners. Norman Servant chairs the arrangements committee and transportation will be provided by chartered buses.

Parochial School Fundreceives $225 addition

An extra $225 was added to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church parochial school building fund announced by Rev Joseph Sorzana pastor. News subscriptions include $100 from Junior Children of Mary Sodality in memoriam of Erminia Romano $50 Santo Alessandro and $25 Teresa Scolaro.

Bristol Army Drives Annual Appeal With $1000 Quota

The army begins its drive on August 5 in Bristol setting a $1,000 quota. Mr Nelson chairs the Bristol Appeal and also serves on the Service Fund Committee guiding volunteer efforts this year.

Almeida Family Receives Added Service Medals

The Almeida family of Bristol is awarded additional World War II honors for their son Private Anthony C Almeida USMC the first Bristol casualty. They receive a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with two stars and the Victory Medal from the U S Marine Corps with notice to update address if needed.

Statue In Memory Of Pfc Proto Dedicated At Mt. St. Joseph

A life size statue of St Joseph was blessed and dedicated to memory of Pfc Louis Proto killed in action in France July 28, 1944. The ceremony at Mt St Josephs Convent drew many clergy from Providence area churches. The couple Charles and Filomena Falugo funded the statue and inscription.

Factory Incinerator Stack To Be Lengthened

The Bristol Plant of United States Rubber Co will shut its incinerator from August 2 for four to six weeks. During the shutdown furnace changes will be made and the stack height increased from 50 feet to 100 feet to improve conditions complained about by nearby residents.

Serbst as Senatorial Nomination Candidate Consideration

Bristol town records reveal strong talk that Councilman Henry F Serbst may enter the Republican race for State Senator. The local committee led by Anthony W Du Pont named two other candidates and endorses W Carnee Dyer for US Senator Ernest R Dupre for Governor and Fred C Broomhead for Lt Governor in the 1946 election.

Veterans cards return drive for memorial vote nears half

Bertram W. Wall says about 500 of 1300 memorial ballots sent to veterans have come back this week. He plans to report to the Town Council on August 6 and expects at least half the cards returned by then. Wall will not disclose current trends to the press before the council meeting.

Leather bookbinding exhibit at Long Field by Daniel G Knowlton

Daniel G Knowlton son of Mr and Mrs D W Knowlton held a leather bookbinding exhibit Sunday afternoon at his home Long Field in this town. The display featured many fine pieces showing intricate designs and his long interest and skill in the art drew friends of the Knowlton family.
