Prudence Island residents debate banning autos amid lack of public roads and widespread unregistered cars. Police Chief Deegan uncovered 70 plus vehicles without plates, raising tax and road maintenance concerns for Portsmouth.
The State Convention committee completed plans for the Eagles event to be held Saturday and Sunday in Bristol. A banquet Saturday night at Hotel Belvedere will kick off activities with 800 to 1000 members expected to attend the parade and events on Sunday.
The Union Church of Prudence Island was formally dedicated with Rev H D Graetz preaching. Bristol First Congregational Church quartet aided, and Miss Jolia Herreshoff donated land near the church aiding debt clearance. next Sunday Rev A O Dewey preaches with children’s story.
Mr Matthew Capone, former Factory Council chairman, met with Mr Davis of the U S Rubber Co in New York to discuss the closing of the Keds Division at Bristol. They debated cost, local plant capacity, and potential future shifts to Naugatuck, with Capone pressing for options and Davis noting cost and proximity factors.
An incendiary fire destroyed an unoccupied cottage on Roslyn Street north of East State Street. Owned by Edmund Ferreira of Newport the cottage burned to the frame after alarms by neighbor Oliver Sousa. Four local fire companies fought the blaze, laying two lines of hose and bringing it under control quickly.
A son James Joseph Jr was born July 18 at Truesdale Hospital Fall River to Mr and Mrs James J Velleca 411 High street. A son Theodore Louis Jr was born July 1 in Dorchester to Mr and Mrs Theodore L Reese. Mrs Reese is formerly Miss Ethel Johnson of this town.

Local boys and girls aged 6 to 11 will compete today in a horseshoe pitching contest on the common. The event was postponed from yesterday due to a small entrant list, allowing more youngsters to enter. Mentioned participants include Mary Candella, Lucy Gaglio, Lavin ig Maturi, Isabel Borges, Caroline Salzano, Madeline Erraciano, and Rose Mascola.
