Stradling Reports Bristol County Reservoirs Near Ninety Percent Full
Bristol County Water Co manager Fred P. Stradling says the three reservoirs Anawan Kirkehill Shad Factory and Swansea are 89.6 percent full with about 5 million gallons daily usage. He sees no immediate concern and expects normal rainfall to avert droughts this summer while noting a new two million gallon per day pumping plant to be ready in October at Nayatt Road Barrington. Stradling warns residents not to waste water by overnight sprinkler use and points out wasteful flat rate accounts in Warren and Bristol.

Rhode Island Workers Vote Strike If No Contract By Aug Fifth
About 700 of 900 eligible workers at U S Rubber Co Rhode Island plants voted 693 to 7 in favor of a strike if a new contract is not agreed by August 5. The union says wage hikes, better pensions, union shop, and medical coverage are sought as negotiations continue after the current contract expired July 1.

Fireworks end three day feast honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The three day Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel concluded with a 11 pm fireworks display at the World War II Veterans Memorial Park attended by about 5000 from Bristol and nearby. A Sunday procession to bless a new parochial school site drew 200 parishioners, with ground breaking on State and High streets. Festivities included concerts by the Portuguese Independent Band and Colonial Band of Providence, plus league games honoring the feast.

Resigns As Civil Defense Head Leaving in August
Rear Admiral Gilbert C Hoover USN Ret said he expects to be away from Bristol indefinitely for work with the Atomic Energy Commission in New Mexico awaiting FBI clearance. If approved he will leave Bristol shortly after August 1 and retain his home on Metacom Avenue, renting it while away for up to three years. He resigns as head of Civil Defense appointed last March and steps down from the World War Two Memorial Committee. He also relinquishes presidencies of the Bristol District Nursing Association and vice commodore of the Bristol Yacht Club. He has a long naval career including WWI service commanding the USS Helena and roles with the joint chiefs of staff and the Atom bomb project.
