Body of James Conway recovered from Mount Hope Bay

The body of James Conway, a Soldiers’ Home inmate, drowned in a boating accident near Spar Island was recovered by Felix LeCroix. Conway, a World War veteran, was 53 and had just passed the ship in the 33rd Field Artillery. His sister and brother live in Providence.

Bristol saloon owners celebrate the return of five cent beer after a brief absence. The Bristol County Liquor Dealers Association had set a ten cent minimum, but public demand and customer satisfaction led many bartenders to revert to the nickel scale within days.

Bristol Battery Prepares for Three Week Encampment

Battery C of the Bristol National Guard, 243rd Coast Artillery, readies for a three week annual tour at Fort H. G. Wright Fisher's Island New York from July 27 to August 17. Commanded by Capt Albert A Moren with Lieutenants George Bates and James J Garvin, the unit reports 76 enlisted men with expectations of 80 at camp. New members include Paul Sallice and Maynard F Suzman. inoculations were conducted by Capt Eugene Hagen who also spoke on hygiene and sanitation.

Town Plans Second Clean-Up Week This Summer

Highway surveyor Richard Connery announces a four day cleanup from July 22 to 25. Residents urged to place rubbish in containers and curbside so one worker can handle it. If successful, the project may continue every two weeks, covering areas south and north of Church Street.

Bristol woman Isabelle Wardwell dies at 92 in Bristol

Miss Isabelle Main Wardwell died at her home 509 Hope Street in Bristol after a lengthy illness. She was born January 12, 1848 and educated at Wheaton Seminary. A longtime church and civic donor, she funded scholarships and supported charitable groups throughout her life. Her funeral will be at 3 PM Sunday from her residence with Rev. Herbert D. Graetz officiating. burial in North Cemetery.

Nurses Drive Will Start Monday in Bristol District

The Bristol District Nursing Association launches its annual financial drive on Monday with a $1500 goal led by chair Miss Julia n Herreshoff. Secretary is Miss Evelyn Carter assisted by the board and nursing committee including Charles B. Rockwell and Brig. Gen. Luke H. Callan among many others. A collision on Hope street caused $175 in damage to two town vehicles while a third car escaped harm.
