Samuel R. Chafee known as Uncle Sam in Middletown quietly marked his 77th birthday at the Chafee House where he has lived with his nephew Charles A. Chafee for ten years. Born July 7 1844 in Bristol Rhode Island he served in the Civil War under General Burnside and is the sole surviving brother in a family of four. He plans a brief visit to Maine after health improves and remains a popular storyteller in town.

In Bristol County court yesterday Judge Frank H Hammill heard the cases of Fred Orrabona Antone Joseph Charles A Mills and William H Taber alleged gang members in the assault and robbery of Charles Scandalis of Philadelphia. The state consented to a two week continuance. bail remains 15000. Other actions include a two week continuation of a case against Val Soards a pistol incident at the Bristol Hotel and several civil and juvenile callings with default or continuance.
