The day’s events include 6:00 AM church bells ring, 10:30 AM Grand Military Firemen and Civic Parade, 12:00 Noon Patriotic Exercises at Reynolds School, 2:00 PM sports program, 3:30 PM baseball at Com, 5:00 PM high trapeze, 6:00 PM Doll Carriage Parade at Byfield School, bicycle race at Common, 8:00 PM vaudeville in front of Reynolds, 9:11 PM band concert at Com, and an 11:15 PM grand pyrotechnics display.
J Winthrop DeWolf and Col Arthur W Barrett wait outside the Burnside Memorial Building for the 4th of July Committee meeting. Barrett notes his 52nd consecutive parade and DeWolf recalls missing four in 54 years as they reminisce about silk hats, frock coats, and horseback processions. Both men plan to march tomorrow, praised as true Bristolians.
Bristol hosts a two day Independence Day program with U S Senators Congressman and Governor as guests. The U S S Kennedy Jr and U S S Johnston arrive for four days of open ship tours and events including a parade and patriotic exercises led by Admiral Hoover with Senator J Howard McGrath as principal speaker.
The engagement of Miss Cynthia McCaw to Richard Simmons Palmer, son of Mrs. John S. Palmer 2nd, is announced by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. McCaw. Miss McCaw, a graduate of St. Marys Junior College Raleigh, N C, plans to attend Rhode Island State College in the fall.
Rear Admiral Gilbert C. Hoover served from 1912 through World War II with postings at the Naval Academy USS Wyoming and USS California. He earned three Navy Crosses for actions at Guadalcanal and the Coral Sea, helped with Manhattan Project proximity fuse work, led the Helena in key battles, and retired after commanding the Naval Ammunition Depot Earle New Jersey. He also served as First Councilman in town elections on the Republican ticket.
Sergeant Arthur J Belmore USMC began in 1917, served in France with the Fifth Marine Brigade earning the Victory Medal and France Clasp. He later joined Rhode Island units and state guard, served WWII in the Marine Corps, and led Sea Scout and Veterans groups while his son Norman served in PT boats.
Miss Anna McCaughey and Robert McCaughey of Hope Street were injured but not seriously in a two car collision on Bristol Ferry Road Portsmouth last night. An unidentified driver of the other car was treated and discharged at Newport Hospital. Mrs McCaughey had lacerations to the left leg and facial bruises while Robert suffered a nose laceration and shock treated by Dr. Hubert Holdsworth.
Mt Carmel of the Independent Amateur League accepts a challenge from USS Johnston for a Sunday doubleheader on the Town Common. Activities include a 1:30 lineup, boxing at 8:30, novelty races at 2, bicycle races at 6, and a doll carriage parade at the Byfield School.
