Program notes list a 9 00 pm band concert by a Portuguese independent group on the Common followed by 00 am church bells. A 10 00 am grand military and civic parade and 12 00 noon patriotic exercises in front of Reynolds School are scheduled, with 4 30 pm vaudeville entertainment on the Common.
Approximately 40 tables have been sold for the Fourth of July bridge and food sale in St Michael's Parish House at 8 o'clock. Regina Farley chairs the committee and says tickets may be bought at the door. Foods include cakes pies cookies cupcakes and other pastries. War Bond sales reach $60 of the $25 bond. A list of subscribers prize winners and donors will appear in Tuesday's Phoenix.
Local Red Cross branch requests a cabinet radio for the Melville recreation hall and a portable Victrola for a small ship. Donors should contact Mrs. Diman at the Red Cross headquarters 266-W or Miss Mary Street at Bristol 778.
Bristol prepares a two day Fourth of July observance featuring a wartime parade with new units including 60 WAACS from Fort Devens SPARS from the Coast Guard and nine Bristol stationed RAF members along with Army engineers and local midshipmen. Senior officials including Chief Marshal Hopkins and Governor McGrath lead a multi division procession through town with no civilian autos allowed.
Captain Culbert C Hoover, decorated with three Navy Crosses for gallantry, was elected an honorary member of the Bristol Rotary Club. He led Destroyer Task Force Two in key Pacific actions including Coral Sea, Midway, Cape Esperance, and Guadalcanal, earning three Navy Crosses and saving many lives. His family has resided on Metacom Avenue, Bristol, while he serves as naval ordnance inspector in Philadelphia.
A public service of divine worship will be held Sunday at 8 oclock at St Michael's Church. The event features a patriotic program with military and naval uniforms, a church flag blessing, and remarks from Gov Howard McGrath and numerous clergy and officials. Musicians from local churches and St Andrew's School will perform. The service includes a full order of worship and a whist party benefit event on Saturday in Lincoln Hall.
