U S Humphries has been assigned to the Bristol shipyard for naval duties including the destroyer and submarine S-4. The vessels are expected to arrive at the harbor within the week, with crew preparations underway.
The U S S Humphries will replace the U S S King and anchor in Bristol Harbor tomorrow afternoon for the Fourth of July observance, with the U S S 4 submarine also in port. The celebration committee received 359.00 from various fundraisers, led by totals from the bridge, raffle, pennies, and program committees. Winners in the raffle were announced, and mayors McCoy and Sprague will participate in the grand parade. Bristol Girl Scouts will march, led by Mrs. Sturdevant, with troops and leaders named for parade duties.
A list of summer residents and visitors at Fer ry Hill includes Mr and Mrs A G B Steel from Chestnut Hill and Philadelphia. Providence couples Maurice Congdon and Mary Blumer, Danforth, Tingley, Marshall, Nicholson, Babcock, and Low families are also noted as spending the season there. Dr Paul J Campanella, son of Joseph Campanella, has completed hospital training and will practice in Syracuse after holiday return.
Bristol readies a two day Independence Day program despite wartime fears. The schedule includes a Bristol Harbor arrival of the U S S Humphries and U S S 4, a Fall River Red Sox versus Bristol Rangers game on the Common, a Bristol Portuguese American Band concert, a midnight fireworks display, and a grand parade expected to draw about 30 000 people led by Lieut Edward J Fitzgerald.
The Bristol celebration features the Bristol Portuguese-American Independent Band, a 1 pm salute by 103rd Field Artillery from R I G, and a bugle and drum corps contest at Bristol Common. An evening concert runs 9 to 11 pm followed by a grand pyrotechnic display at 10. A large parade includes U S forces, Coast Artillery, Navy units, Boy and Girl Scouts, and local officials with dignitaries expected. The line of march traverses High Union and Hope streets ending at Reynolds School and the Governor Bradford House reception.

Bristol Boy Scouts Troop Two will carry brand new national and troop flags in the Fourth of July parade on Thursday morning. The colors were presented by the Italian Socialites Women’s Club at patriotic exercises Sunday at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church parish hall.
Bristol Police Chief Anthony J Ferrara appeals to parents to help maintain a safe Fourth of July. He cautions against high explosives and dangerous behavior, urges reporting violations, and lists ten safety dos and don ts to protect marchers, bystanders, and drivers during Independence Day festivities.
Peter Joseph Alfano and William Henry Angevine Jr. graduated from Norwich University with bachelor of science degrees in chemistry. Alfano, son of Mrs. Rose Alfano of 224 Wood Street, was noted as a Norwich football standout. both attended Colt Memorial High School.
Citizens are urged to support war relief through the Bristol Branch of the American Red Cross. Checks should be payable to the Bristol Branch American Red Cross and contributed to aid efforts at home and abroad.
