Bristol Officials Contribute To Family Court Plan

Bristol Police Chief Anthony J. Ferrara and Bristol Schools Superintendent Edward J. Fitzgerald testified during a 16 month study by the Family Court Study Commission. Bristol Water Company Offers Franchise Tax Increase

The Bristol County Water Company proposes raising the franchise tax from one tenth of one percent to three percent of gross earnings. Chairman Thomas Braman sent a letter to council president William Sousa proposing the higher rate, aiming to boost annual town revenue to about 500. Further meetings with the local water contract committee are to be set, as talks continue on a new 25 year contract after the old agreement expired last May.

Lowest Bid On New Library Sets $108,928 Figure

Narragansett Bay Construction Co led eight bidders for the Rogers Free Library reconstruction in Providence. The lowest net bid after alternates was $108,928 with a $10,558 deduction. Other bids ranged from $123,427 to $134,840, with various alternates proposed. The library board will review bids and plans to raise $50,000 for the project.

Cafe Hours Extended to 2 A.M. with Local Approval Needed

A House approved a measure allowing cafes to stay open until 2 a.m. on the night before Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve, with an added amendment requiring local licensing boards to grant permission for the longer hours. Rep George Lima sponsored the bill, while three Republicans opposed, citing public safety concerns. The Senate is considering the bill amid other Warren proposals and a separate damage claim stemming from a 1956 incident in Bristol.
