Highway surveyor Joseph F. Pannone says delayed householder participation disrupts the two day refuse collection plan. He notes crews cannot predict volume and may miss first day pickups in districts, despite printed schedules.
Members and guests of the Bristol Women’s Republican club heard talks on improving the party and on a proposed revaluation of town properties for taxation. Speakers were Mrs. Henry S. Wheeler of Narragansett and Roger W. Pigeon, planning board chair. Mrs. Earl G. Sturdevant presided at the dinner. Piano by Earl Rounds accompanied songs.
Boys wishing to play in the Little League may obtain blank forms at the Phoenix office next week. A large supply is being printed to meet the demand of many anxious boys who want to enter their names in time to secure places on teams.
With next Monday’s filing deadline, interest grows in who the GOP will sponsor for town offices. No official word from chairman Frank J. Sylvia, but speculation centers on former and current officials such as Paul A. Herzig, John P. Marshall, Henry C. Miranda, Fred Guevremont, Paul C. Millemaggi, and Francis J. Murphy for school committee alongside PTA figure Mrs. Russell S. Bray.
Rotary club members heard Lt. Col. Capone describe areas vulnerable to atomic blast heat fire and radiation. He warned a future attack could strike this town and urged civilian defense training while noting Russia leads in preparedness.
The Co-Mar-Cos will show the experimental color film Boundary Lines at 8 o clock Sunday evening in the Guiteras Flouse. The film explores the lines of division caused by color possession and how it separates people from those on the other side.
Collins & Aikman hosts the Quarter Century Club reception at Narragansett hotel Providence at 6 30 p m for 14th annual banquet. Pins awarded for 25 30 35 and 40 years of service with W F Bird presenting.
Arthur M. McCaw chairs the March of Dimes committee to mail out donation slots for polio relief. Louise Brechin leads the production group, with Vasta L. Ruggiero Mauerite Stone Josephine Vitullo and Christine Rich assisting. Other committees cover dues, school collections, coin box placement, and manufacturing firms. Tag day is set for Saturday January 27 with local Girl Scouts leading activities.
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island presents a Screen Tour lecture by Roger Tory Peterson on The Riddle of Migration. The event Monday evening January 22 at 8 o clock at the H Barnard School Providence near the State Capitol. Audubon Screen Tours are a membership privilege with no tickets sold.
Frederick T. Goff, secretary of the Zoning Board, sets a public hearing for Friday at 8 p.m. in the town council chambers to consider building plans for a gas station at the Hope and Wood streets junction. The hearing follows town ordinance procedures and precedes any final decision, while a separate Providence Superior Court order delays a different proposed station until dissolution of a restraining order.
The Bristol Sunshine Society met at 36 Washington Street to mark its first anniversary on Jan. 26. Officers elected include secretary F S Richardson and treasurer Ralph Kinder, with Massano as president and Balzido as vice president continuing in their roles. The group reported sending 1224 sterile bandages, 300 bed pads and 500 sponges to Hattie L Chaffee home and Rose Hawthorne hospital, with more materials needed.
Consulting engineers presented preliminary estimates on moving Bristol Harbor sewer outfall to Mt. Hope Bay or off Bristol Ferry with total costs near 200 000 290 000 and 270 000 respectively. With a 500 000 bond authorization the move appears unlikely and a Thursday meeting was scheduled to answer key questions on location contract timing and data from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
