Gov J Howard McGrath imposes five day work week to save fuel causing a local holiday at Burnside Memorial Building. Town offices shut except police on duty. schools and several town departments closed. Probate Court adjourned. Fifth District Court postponed to Thursday in Warren.
Col C Wellington Furlong will deliver the first of six lectures on international affairs at the Bristol YMCA this evening. He was delayed last Tuesday, but his note says he appreciates the patient reception. The audience included several notable high school and college students, marking the series as a comprehensive and instructive event for Bristol in recent years.
The Pailthorpe Memorial Committee will keep accepting donations for another month at the Holmes House. More than 200 contributors have already given, with secretary treasurer Mrs John Stewart noting continued appreciation for further gifts. Names of additional supporters include Florence T Nelson, Robert W Nelson, Lillian T Wilson, J Ellery Ingraham, Arthur M McCaw, and many others.
Air raid wardens distribute questionnaires to commuters using buses to gauge potential use of a restored New Haven line between Bristol and Providence. Bertram W Wall, Chief Warden, says responses will be collected soon for the Bristol County Transportation Committee.
Bristol Girl Scout troops will canvas the town Saturday to collect books for the USO. Mrs Farr and Mrs James McWennie lead the effort as part of community service. Volunteers will gather technical and popular books published since 1935, with streets assigned to each troop to help the collection.
The Bristol Branch of the American Red Cross was given a $100 check by a local businessman who asked to remain unnamed. Mrs. Clara L. Diman, executive secretary, said the donor’s note praised the Red Cross for its year of service to the Army and others and urged continued aid. The chapter seeks more women for sewing and surgical dressings to meet high demand from Providence headquarters.
First Bristol Troop Scouts attended a 9 am mass at St Elizabeth's Church with Scoutmaster George Ro Fish in charge. The Bristol County District rally marks the Frost Troops sixth anniversary and features games, contests, and a three minute stunt from each troop with Harold Williams as principal guest.
Bristol County Selective Service Board announces 58 of 125 eighteen year olds registered from December 11 to 31 reside in Bristol. Warren accounts for 37 registrants and Barrington 30. General Herbert R Dean says men born on or after January 1 1925 must register on the day they turn 18, ensuring a steady flow into the service during the war.
Committees named and plan set for a Bristol drive to fight infantile paralysis. Funds come from March of Dimes, tag days, a benefit basketball game, and private subscriptions. March of Dimes runs through the month with student tag day next Wednesday and general tag days the following Friday and Saturday. The fundraiser golf ball game is organized by Hubert F. Hill and will be held Sunday, January 31st. The campaign emphasizes community-wide participation from shops, offices, and liquor establishments, with coin boxes featuring a wheelchair-bound child urging support. The effort aims to unite Bristol in aiding polio victims and promoting world peace.
The Corporation of St Michael's Church voted at a Sunday meeting to close the church and move Palm Sunday services to the Parish House to conserve oil during the emergency. Heating will switch from oil to coal where feasible, with a committee led by John Ro Mavee and Rev AR Parshlex preparing the Parish House and supervising arrangements by Walks In Hewe, J Winthrop DeWolf, Magee, Mrs Henrys Wood, Mrs Witham Pinch, and Mrs Frederik Coggeshall.
Judge Edward J. Leahy chaired the Bristol Advisors Committee at the sixty first annual Rhode Island SPCC gathering held at the Nantations Club. After lunch, Howard Pierce Davis of the Boston Transcript spoke on world conditions. Other Bristol attendees were Mrs Charles Rockwell, Mrs Charles Jencks, and Roswell Bosworth.
Colt Memorial defeated Barrington 40 to 27 at Andrews Gymnasium to claim its third Class C win. Vallaro and Parisi sparked the rally from 8-7 and 16-15 early leads, finishing with 11 points from Cavallaro and 11 from Secure. Warren led with 6 by Fowler and O'Neil. Colt's junior varsity also beat Barrington 24-0. Colt plays Warren High tonight in Warren gym.
Violinist Rubinoff will perform his transcription of George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue on his Stradivarius at a February 8 Colt Memorial High School concert in Bristol under Rotary Club sponsorship. The unusual arrangement blends violin technique with a piano masterwork to reveal new color and tone.
