Red Cross plans evacuation amid kerosene shortage

By noon today no families had registered at Red Cross headquarters for evacuation needs if kerosene becomes scarcer. The second registration followed a Sunday announcement, with officials considering mass shelter options at YMCA and armory centers and coordinating through the Evacuation Marshal and Red Cross committees.

War Department tightens overseas package rules

Secretary Henry L. Stimson announced new Army limits on sending care packages to soldiers abroad. Beginning January 15 only packages with soldier requests approved by the commanding officer will be accepted, limited to five pounds and 15 inches in length. Magazines and newspapers may only be mailed by publishers to subscribing soldiers.

Navy Lists Charles W. McGinn Jr. Missing in Action

Charles W. McGinn Jr. sec 2 c U S Navy son of Mr and Mrs Charles McGinn of 2 Howes street reported missing in action telegram received by his father. He joined after Pearl Harbor and is believed in the Southern Pacific area. He was 22 last month and prior to enlistment worked as a shearling cutter at Bristol Manufacturing Company. He has two brothers in local schools and his father served in the Army in the last war and now works at the post office.

Last Night's Blackout Considered A Success

A blackout last evening was largely successful despite eight minor violations. Chief Air Raid Warden Bertram Wall said sirens on Wood Hone streets and Peck Avenue were silent at times. two ambulances and five first aiders were on duty. The all clear came at 9 43, with 9 18 warning initial and 9 33 second warning.

DeWolf Chapel Closed Temporarily For Fuel Conserving

The DeWolf Memorial Chapel of the First Congregational Church was closed temporarily to conserve fuel oil. Sunday School departments will meet in the church auditorium and at Guiteras House during the closure. St Marys Church Honors Service Men Honor Roll

Father Michael L Ryan blessed a service flag and dedicated the honor roll listing the 143 parish men in the armed forces. Father Vincent J Griffin read the names as prayers and a hymn by the senior choir followed. Chaplain, U S Army, preached the sermon and Benediction closed with the Star Spangled Banner.
