Bristol Year in Review 1968 Highlights and Changes
A retrospective on Bristol Rhode Island in 1968 notes major gains and losses. Highlights include the YMCA pool opening, Colt State Park dedication, and a 46 acre Green Acres site purchased for wildlife and recreation. The year brought severe cold, ice bound harbor, and May floods. Anniversaries marked included St. Michael's 250th and Hydraulion Engine 125th. Other items: Fund drive surpassing its goal, Roger Williams College campus progress, Bristol Community Center, a Spanish American War Memorial dedication, new ambulance and fire engine, and the Bristol Peregrinations tour. Fires at a Hope Street block and the Metacom Avenue homestead, 4th of July success with USS Hugh Purvis, and organizational shifts in health and nursing groups. Pensioned milestones included Kaiser’s Portsmouth plant, Rev Toal departure, and a Democratic shift in town government. Economic and civic plans faced hurdles, including a dog track petition and a proposed luxury high rise. Groundbreaking for a RI Veterans Home wing, new post office fleet, and national mournings marked the year, with talk of an East Side Expressway remaining dormant. Happy New Year.

Weather And Sickness Curtail New Year Festivities 1969
New Year's Day arrived with heavy rain and cold winds as illness, chiefly Hong Kong flu, kept many indoors. A rare accident tally showed one on New Year's Eve and none on the holiday. Penn State delivered the standout football finish, winning by a point as crowds watched parades on TV.
