The robin, larger than Britain's, reportedly reached Lundy Island off England after a possible 40 hour flight aided by a 35 mph wind. Smithsonian expert Dr. Herbert D. Deignan considers the voyage plausible, noting robins’ odd haunts and migratory mysteries.
Roland C Clement of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island invites readers to vote for a state bird. A ballot listing bob white hummingbird osprey RI red hen and towhee plus write ins is published amid support from Audubon Society Federation of Garden Clubs and Providence Journal Company. Louis Dickinson backs the osprey as typical for the poll. Scores of osprey nest in the area each summer.
After a four hour private session the zoning board granted DeFelice Florists a variance to build a shop and showroom at 271 Wood Street. Neighbors Anthony and Ida Del Toro opposed the plan while Achille Mangiante awaited report and left before it was delivered. The board stated the decision serves the public interest and is a variation of the use district regulation.
The Bristol Town Council backed a five member Bristol Beach Commission to regulate all public beaches, hire police and employees, set bath and parking fees, spend funds, and propose ordinances. The act, now before the General Assembly, would appoint five non partisan residents to staggered terms and grant authority to lease manage and control beaches with council approval after a public hearing.
The Planning Board discussed using public water for the Church Cove plat off Metacom Avenue after weighing water supply vs sewage disposal. Walter J. Shes urged no new subdivisions without a public system or a sole protected well. Bristol County Water Co tie-in was viewed skeptically due to distance. The department will test soil conditions to help determine the water plan. The board also addressed the timing of appointing their building codes subcommittee, set for March 24.
Joseph Murgo, temporary chair of Bristol’s newly formed building code committee, was empowered by the town council to recommend qualified applicants after the old committee was discharged. President Joseph Bruno cited outdated members and refusals, prompting Murgo to add names for the new panel.
About one third of the 150 pint quota was collected as the Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Colt school. A total of 58 pints were drawn, with 21 donors walking in and 64 volunteering. six could not donate and 15 who promised did not appear. An honor roll lists those who donated and assisted, with many community volunteers noted for support.
Tickets for the state high school championship at Keaney Gym Kingston go on sale next week per Carl T Carlson director of athletics at the senior high. Colt faces DeLasalle in a Class A semifinal next Saturday at 7 30 p m with tickets 1 25 reserve 75 general 60 student. Transportation may be arranged if a large sale occurs. If Colt wins the game on the 6th they advance to the finals on the 12th.
Joseph Parisi 17 Pearce Avenue has been appointed sales representative for All State Insurance Company. He will maintain a home office and work from the Garden City Cranston claims office after completing a month of training at the company school in Newark New Jersey. Parisi is a Bristol High School graduate of 1949, served three years in the U S Navy as a Pharmacist Mate, and earned a salesmanship degree from Childs McKellar School in 1951. He is married with two children.
Eighteen former winners of the Bristol Chapter DAR good citizenship award will be invited to an evening meeting March 8 at the chapter house on Franklin Street. Miss Margaret Manchester will receive this year’s award pin. A list of prior winners since 1936 is provided, noting several dates and names.
A local blood bank plan proposed by Donald M. Burger would keep blood within the town for needy patients. It would pool local organizations, allocate 33 percent to the Red Cross national program, and cover hospital blood costs, reducing dependence on friends for donations. Bristol officials noted potential feasibility but financial and hospital-approval hurdles were seen as major drawbacks, needing $30 000 to $40 000 yearly beyond current Red Cross funding.
