Captain Courtland Clarke of Battery C requests flags helmets gloves and scarves and other equipment costing about 100 dollars. He notes state funds are unavailable and equipment has been borrowed from veterans groups. Mil ton W. Seymour is promoted to corporal in the communications section.
Rev. Frederick F Driftmier urged revolutionaries to resist tyranny and support those oppressed abroad in a Washingtons Birthday talk at Bristol Chapter D A R on Franklin Street. Mrs Harry Williamson presided and read messages, with Miss Margaret Manchester named 1954 Good Citizen and Mrs William Yates honored for community service.
Mrs. Dorothy Swan Malley spoke to Bristol Historical Society on the ties between Bristol china closets and early American trading fortunes. Her illustrated lecture covered Cantonese and Nanking trade, export chinaware, and scenes of 18th to early 19th century sea trade with local Herreshoff china photos. Rev. Charles S. Thurber is announced as March speaker by Edith Earle.
Louis M. Lyons veteran journalist and Nieman Foundation curator will headline the Rhode Island Press Club 68th anniversary banquet in Providence. He is known for WGBH FM radio commentaries and coverage of major events including Lindbergh’s return Hauptman trial and three presidential elections.
Pfc. Jack Sinclair son of Rev. and Mrs. John N. Sinclair is back from the Orient after thirty two months overseas. He arrived Friday after a West Coast stop Wednesday and Camp Devens on Thursday. The 21 year old infantryman enlisted January 1951 trained at Indiantown Gap Pa and served with the 45th Infantry Division in Korea for five months before transfer to the 24th Division. He has one year of duty remaining.
Five polio affected families urged Bristonians to donate blood for today’s Red Cross Bloodmobile visit. Chairman Donald M. Burger said response was discouraging with only 57 appointments listed of a 150 pint goal, expecting few walk-ins. He cited statewide New England patterns and praised staff and volunteers.
Orlando J. Bisbano announced his resignation as head of the G O P town committee. The next meeting is March 17 and former successors Frank J. Murphy and Roger W. Pigeon say they are not candidates. Bisbano’s two year term ends in October due to business pressures.
The New England Spring Flower Show runs March 14 to 20 at Mechanics Building Boston. It marks the 125th anniversary of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society with displays including a replica of the Society’s first building, a waterfront scene, box-bordered gardens, fishery cottage, and concerts. University of Massachusetts roses booth offers home-garden guidance. tropical plant displays feature African violets and gloxinias. Arnold Arboretum Bonsai contributes. A New England hillside camping scene by the Department of Natural Resources completes the panorama.
Carl P. Jones, a rosegrower from Barrington, spoke to the Bayberry Garden Club at the Guiteras house last night. He outlined rose culture and used colored slides to illustrate his talk. Refreshments were served after the meeting by Mrs. Henry F. Ferguson with help from Mrs. Warren Taber and Mrs. Thomas Jannsen.
Mrs James Salzano was elected treasurer and Mrs Joseph Normandin named tour leader at the latest Pap poosesquaw Club meeting. Four members toured the University of Rhode Island in Kingston on February 19. Dr Carl Woodward president spoke in Quinn Hall after touring home economics and agriculture colleges. The air is meeting tonight at Mrs Normandin s Sea View Avenue home at 8 00.
The First Bristol Troop, Boy Scouts of America, honored George Washington at a Scout Hall night meeting. The Wampanoag Patrol led the program with games and dramas depicting Washingtons life and a birthday party with cake. The evening featured Cherry Tree chopping, a silver dollar river toss, and dramatizations including Washington at Valley Forge and Crossing the Delaware.
Roswell S. Bosworth resumes editorship of The Phoenix after a seven month term by Alden W. F. Poole, who has left for the daily newspaper field. Bosworth Jr. becomes managing editor after five years on the mechanical side.
The Title Club held its annual banquet and election at the Midway Steak and Lobster House, naming James Stoughton chairman and Floyd Byone vice chairman. Dennis Vieira received a wrist watch for service, with Col Franklin H Springer presenting. Edward Bevis served as toastmaster and Col. Springer, Ferrara, Lombardi, Rinald, and Van Voast were named to the board.
The Bristol Branch R L World Affairs Council invites the public to hear Godfrey H Jansen public relations officer of the Indian delegation to the United Nations speak at 8 oclock in Guiteras House High Street. Jansen, born in Burma and educated in India, has a wide journalism background and has served India in foreign countries before joining the Indian UN delegation.
Mrs scanlon administrative principal of elementary schools in Bristol is recovering after an operation at Roger Williams Hospital this morning. Warren Chamber of Commerce voted 50 dollars to the Bristol Industrial Fund at its annual meeting Thursday. Col Roy L Lawin publisher of the Warren and Barrington Gazette was elected chamber president. A YMCA volleyball tournament for junior and senior high boys will be held tomorrow at 1 00 p m with eight teams selected on the floor. A Providence YMCA trip departs Thursday at 1 00 p m for swimming basketball and indoor games. Seventy six Girl Scouts enjoyed a skating party at the Rhode Island Auditorium with chaperones listed. A Bristol Narrows Improvement Association card party benefited the ee fund at the White Rail.
