Bristol and the Yankee privateer myth in 1875
A Bristol Phoenix reader argues that Perry Winckle’s tales of the privateer Yankee and the Macdonough exaggerate feats. He asserts the Yankee never captured warships and that the Macdonough, built in Warren in 1814, proved superior in certain maneuvers. The piece urges preserving Bristol’s marine history in sober terms.

Banking Development Conference Draws Fifteen Hundred Bankers
Fifteen hundred bankers from fifteen eastern states met in Philadelphia for a two day series of meetings on legislative, managerial, operating and public relations issues in banking. The discussions covered banking laws, public relations, and the Government's emergency services, with emphasis on surveying how banks can assume certain functions. O Howard Wolfe explained forty eight discretionary powers in the Banking Act of 1936 while Charles H Mylander urged fair taxation of banks and cited 1934 earnings figures showing tax burdens varied by district and the impact on bank failures.
