Disagreement persists between rival factions of the Republican Town Committee despite a bid to reconcile at a Wednesday meeting led by Dr. John R. Bernardo. A three member conciliatory panel was named and plans for the March election moved forward with committees for posters and campaigns.
The second Community Lenten service will be held Sunday at 730 PM in St Michael's Episcopal Church. Rev Kenneth L Cober, executive secretary of Christian education for the Rhode Island Baptist State Convention, will deliver the sermon. A pre service program by a double male quartet lasts fifteen minutes and they sing the offertory anthem with joint choirs from three Protestant churches. Ushers named are William A Tucker John Brechin Frank A Rounds and Roger Pigeon.
Maynard Shusman of Bristol rises from corporal to sergeant with U S Troop Carrier Forces based in France. An instrument mechanic and aircraft electrician, he has been overseas nearly a year and is son of Mr and Mrs Philip Shusman of 574 Wood Street. He is a 1939 Colt Memorial High School and 1943 Rhode Island College of Education graduate and serves in Service Wing under Col Franklin S Henley.
Town Treasurer and Mrs William H Angevine of Hope Street are hopeful that their son Lt William H Angevine Jr a prisoner of the Germans may have been freed by the advancing Russian Army. Russian communiques say territory containing St Angevine's camp has been liberated this week with no word yet from any source. St Angevine's wife Jean de Rocha Angevine lives on Chapin Rd Barrington.
Lt John W Haley Jr son of Mr and Mrs John W Haley of 129 Blackstone Boulevard Providence formerly of this town was slightly wounded in action in Belgium on February 1 according to notification received by his parents He is a member of an infantry division and has been overseas since September A graduate of Augusta Military Academy Fort Defiance Va he enlisted in July 1941 and later received his commission at Fort Benning Ga
Pvt Boswell S Bosworth Jr son of Mr and Mrs Bosworth of 1172 Hope Street has passed classification tests for an Army Air Forces aviation cadet. He trains six months at Keesler Field Mississippi after joining the Air Corps Enlisted Reserve in Sept 1943 and entering active service Jan 27 1944. He is a Bristol High School graduate with six months at Massachusetts State College under ART and Civil Air Patrol member.
Gabriel L Nastri of Bristol Rhode Island promoted to corporal in a troop carrier squadron based in the Marianas. He has served over eight months in forward areas handling millions of pounds of high priority air freight and mail. Nastri, son of Mrs Tommasina Nastri, worked as a carpenter before joining the RAF in May 1942 and has been overseas since May 1943 as a carpenter and supply clerk for the Transport Air Group.
Colt Memorial five were defeated by the Barrington quintet 57 to 50 in Andrews Gym last evening. D McMann and J McMann led Barrington with 17 points each, Ferry added 16, while Colt’s DelPiano had 15 and Cavallaro with 12 and Velleca 11. Colts trailing 10 9, 21 23, 41 35 by periods. Colt to face St Andrew's School in Bristol Tuesday night.
Bristol Rhode Island Town Council adopts a resolution praising Sgt Peter Cavalieri for gallantry and devotion to duty in World War II. The measure commends his Distinguished Service Cross and extends public recognition while noting his return to civilian life soon. Cavalieri leaves for Washington, DC for ceremony.
Oliver S Edmiston spoke on Rotary International’s 40th anniversary noting growth from building individuals. He cited Rotary in community service and Rotary in reverse as examples. The Bristol Rotary Club, 16 years old, hosted the talk with Sgt James J. Sylvia as a guest and Vernon A Gray leading singing.
The Bristol Chapter D A R held its annual Washington's Birthday luncheon at the Belvedere Hotel. Mrs Howard K DeWolf proposed a toast to Washington, with Mrs Earl P Mathewson delivering the response. Mrs Buell N Buckingham Jr sang solos. Auction bridge prize went to Mrs Louis Barker and contract bridge prize to Miss Alice B Almy.
Bristol Community Y M C A plans to enter two teams in the Junior and Senior Massachusetts and Rhode Island Two State Y Basketball Championship tournaments this March. Junior players include Rene Anania Anderton Morra Topazio Mancieri Matrone Pellegrimo with Bristol and Attleboro, Providence and Westerly in sectional play. Senior squad features Tappero Finn McCaw Keith Celone Ferrara Manchester Felix Accardi with sectionals in Providence and Lynn leading to a March 31 final in Boston.
Matteo Damiano known as Zi Pep celebrated his 96th birthday at 40 Bourne Street with family including children, grandchildren, and friends. Despite losing a leg two years ago he remains in perfect health and full of vim and vitality, according to relatives.
A Navy recruiting officer will interview applicants at the local post office tomorrow for positions at West Coast and Pearl Harbor naval establishments. Electricians instrument makers and machinists are needed.
R M Goodrich of the Providence Governmental Research Bureau will speak tonight at the Hotel Belvedere for the Citizen's Committee for Good Government. The meeting begins at 8 o'clock and the public is invited.
