Women show strong interest in Bristol County war work

Survey by U S Employment Service reports 602 responses from ages 16 to 73 in three weeks of a voluntary campaign. About 60 percent are in or want war work. Of 55 women needing child care, 24 live in Bristol, 17 in Warren, 14 in Barrington. Oficials say nurseries could widen labor pool for war effort.

Fun Nite Opens With Active Attendance at Bristol

The Bristol Y M C A sponsors a weekly Fun Nite for high school age youths at the YouM Nat tracted over 60 young attendees. Activities include table games and social dancing with supervision by Tiubert Fo RRL and Mr Hall clarifying there is no official high school sponsorship. The event runs Saturdays from 7 30 to 11 o'clock, as shown on all invitations.

Chichi Ferrara Arrested After Assault

Frank W Chichi Ferrara was arrested on an assault charge after an incident with his girlfriend Louise Carlone at Bourne Street Warren near the Bristol line. He allegedly dragged Carlone from a car slashed her face and head then fled before surrendering to Capt Wheeler. Carlone was treated by Dr Forget and to Truesdale Hospital in fair condition. Ferrara faces arraignment in the Fifth District Court on the assault with a dangerous weapon charge.

Barber Shop to Open Daily Except Mondays

Notice that Estrella Arpaia says the Barber Shop will open daily from 8 a m to 7 p m starting February 23 with Monday closures and Saturday hours extended to 9 p m.

Bristol Fire Department Reports Year of Low Losses and Upgrades

The Board of Fire Engineers reports near record low fire losses for the year and credits taxpayer and Bristol Council of Defense cooperation for upgrading gear including rubber clothing and helmets. The 1943 appropriation request totals 9910 with allocations for maintenance, fire company special, insurance, and depreciation reserves. Repairs delayed by bid and material shortages shift to a depreciation fund and new projects include station heating, interior refurbishments, roof repairs, and painting. A motorized hose company at Bristol Highlands and a pump trailer at the Narrows are noted as valuable additions. The old Ever Ready pumper to be stripped and sold.

Boy Scouts report progress on the Victory Book Drive for servicemen statewide. Many books are already received and pickups will occur later this week as each troop gathers from its town and delivers to Rogers Free Library collection depot.

Tin Cans Collected Friday by St Andrews Club Helpers

Ian M. Walker announces 14 members of the St Andrews Club will assist the Highway Department in collecting tin cans Friday. Trucks start early and continue until all are gathered. Housewives asked to prepare cans in cardboard containers and place curbside before homes. Helpers include Wesley A. Community Chest Plans Form Board Of Representatives

Five organizations will join to organize a Community Chest and adopt by laws. A Thursday 7 30 p m meeting at the Y M C A will appoint a Board of Directors with two delegates from each group including the Y M C A and the nursing association S P C C and Girl and Boy Scouts. The organizers expect to add two at large representatives per group. Local industrials strongly back the effort.
