Mrs Mary C Bowen Bristol oldest resident marked her one hundredth birthday yesterday afternoon at Home for the Aged on Franklin street. The room bloomed with flowers and flags as relatives gathered to congratulate the celebrated centenarian who remains bed bound yet cheerful.
Mrs Bowen celebrated her centennial with a formal cake cutting after 100 candles lit by three neighbors and Rev Dr McGilton. About 75 callers offered remembrances of fruit, flowers, and apparel as Miss Aida Connery sang and prayers were offered. The event highlighted Mrs Bowen born February 21 1818 in the town to Mason Wheeler Pierce and Lucinda Davis.
The wives of Y M C A members and the ladies department will bowl at the Y M C A alleys this evening. A tournament for Wednesday afternoon bowling in the ladies department is organized under Mrs. J H Wall with strong interest.
This evening at the Star Theatre W A Walsh presents the William Fox drama Betrayal with Miriam Cooper in the lead and a cast including Big Jim Marcus Hobart Bosworth and Monte Blue plus The Hidden Hand and Seeds of Love. Saturday features Louise Glaum in Idolaters The Lost Express Pathe News and Triangle comedy. Monday shows Madge Evans in The Little Duchess in six acts.
The Republican caucus in Bristol County Courthouse nominated town officers with large turnout and no opposition for Assessor of Taxes. Key picks include Moderator George A Arnold Town Clerk John M Coggeshall and a full slate for Town Council and School Committee. The Democratic caucus later kept the same slate with Joseph M Edmonds as Second Voting District clerk and John W Church switching to Republican.
United States Senator LeBaron B. Colt delivered an eloquent patriotic address at a joint General Assembly session on Washingtons Birthday. He framed the crisis as a test of liberty and a closer union of nations and called for America to lead in building a new world democracy and enduring peace.
A cablegram confirms Lieut Col L H Callan of the 107th U S Engineers has arrived safely over there. His wife learned of the safe arrival this morning and relatives share relief after fears tied to the Tuscania sinking.
The Colonial Club presents a patriotic dance this evening at the G. A. R. Hall. Wynne's Orchestra provides music and moonlight dancing will be featured after tickets sold out earlier.
