First US salute by France marks 178th anniversary tale

February marks the 178th anniversary of the first salute to the American flag by a foreign power France on February 14 1778 aboard the Ranger near Quiberon Bay Captain John Paul Jones received a thirteen gun salute that was answered with nine guns by Vice Admiral La Motte Picquet The event is recounted from Jones report and Dr Ezra Green’s journal in consular communications with Silas Deane.

Colt to meet La Salle in Class C playoff tilt at Barrington

Colt faces La Salle Academy in a Thursday night Class C preliminary playoff at Barrington High Gym at 8 p.m. The winner advances to the March 1 quarterfinals against Woonsocket. Colt sports a 11-3 season with 981 points scored and 834 allowed while La Salle sits at 10-2 with 801 points for and 623 against.

Washington Letter on 1780 Army Support Display at Bristol

Bristol Historical Society displayed a four page 1780 George Washington letter to Evelin C. Bache in commemoration of Washington’s birthday. The manuscript, noting Philadelphia ladies gifts for soldiers, suggests linen shirts for the troops. Display runs through Friday and Saturday with a concurrent exhibition of antique boxes baskets and samplers led by Mrs Calbraith B Perry. Dr David Lovejoy of Brown University spoke on Rhode Island elections before the Revolution.

Town to seek sewer upgrades at April meeting

The town plans to propose several sewer system improvements at April town meeting. Major item is a relief line in Mt Hope Avenue serving Buttonwood Avenue industries and nearby residences to prevent storm back ups. Also discussed are a comminutor at the disposal plant, a cess pool truck, and a boiler for plant heating. Minturn Farm extension tied to an industrial park study may follow. Mt Hope line cost about $50,000. Minturn Farm extension about $30,000.

Ingram Heads Study on Bristol Sewer Plan

George T. Ingram Jr was elected head of a new sewer study committee at an organisation meeting. Albert V. Pearson was named secretary. The panel will study possible local taxes and sinking funds for town sewers. Louis Medeiros, sewer commission chair, urged a report within a year if possible. The seven members come from both town and outlying areas, forming after a stalemate over extending sewers to outskirts.
