The Bristol school department proposes an 8,770 increase for the 51 fiscal year with 261,733 requested from the town, up 12,000 from the prior appropriation. Salaries rise due to teacher increases and service steps, while a 5,000 repair program funds Oliver School replacement and classroom modernization, creating need for six more classrooms next fall.

Dr John R Bernardo, longtime holder since 1936, announced retirement and named a nominating committee led by J Floyd Huestis to pick successors. Orlando J Bisbane said the meeting would be closed but a final announcement would follow.
Town council members met in a special session to study budget requests from the council and other departments before tonight’s 8 o’clock meeting with the budget board.
