Bristol residents learned the War Department confirmed Lieut. Col. L. H Callan was not aboard the torpedoed British transport Tuscania off Ireland. It was the 107th Engineer Train, not the Engineer Regiment, on the ship. officer rank limits noted no general officers were aboard. The Tuscania carried about 2,397 people with 2,184 survivors and 210 listed missing or unaccounted for pending updates.

A benefit dance at GAR Hall Tuesday evening drew nearly 390 attendees. The N I R Orchestra provided music as Mr and Mrs R W Holt and Mr and Mrs George Schlosser led a grand march at 9 30. Dancing continued until midnight, increasing the fund by about 250 dollars.
