Family Court for Rhode Island Proposed by Special Study
A Rhode Island special study committee urges a four judge Family Court to replace the Juvenile Court and the Domestic Relations division. It stresses dedicated judges with social concern, noting overlaps in family cases and the need for a state-wide court. The panel cites hearings, a New York visit, and 17 months of work, naming Judge Francis J McCabe and Judge John M. Booth for potential seats, plus Florence K. Murray and a fourth legislatively created judge. The report calls for balanced analysis of resource use including Narragansett Bay and a refinery, warning against tying progress to narrow gain and urging careful, public-interest decisions.
