Only capital ship to sail during World War II attacks
The vessel survived attacks in 1927 and the Pearl Harbor sneak, was beached to keep the harbor channel clear, and later supported Atlu landings in 1943. She fought at Cherbourg, endured worn guns, joined Iwo Jima bombardment in 1945, and operated off Okinawa where she was damaged before silencing a shore battery. She later took part in the Marshalls action and was slated for scrapping before becoming a target ship in a nuclear test program.
