Four Bristol Men Held on Assault Charges in Newport Jail

Lucien Monteiro 33 and three others were arrested after a Bristol to Portsmouth assault plan that misfired. Monteiro confessed after a nitrate hand test. Fragosa, a key witness, was held as a material witness. Bail set totaling 3500 for Monteiro and 1000 each for his three co-defendants.

P. T. A. Celebrates Founders Day at Colt Memorial High

The P T A marked Founders Day the 37th anniversary with a program in the Colt Memorial high auditorium. Mary Spooner welcomed attendees as Barbara Newman and sister performed violin solos, candles on a birthday cake forming thirty seven, and translations into Portuguese and Italian followed by a candy bags distribution. A national message was read and a patriotic poem given. The group announced a Marionette show at Reynolds School on March 1 with Miss Spooner presiding in Capone’s absence due to illness.

Rotary District Governor Urges Roosevelt Support

Rotary District Governor E L Merritt M D of the 31st District urged Bristol Rotary to back President Roosevelt in his reconstruction program. He linked NRA principles to Rotary and praised the President as a Rotarian ally. The talk occurred at the Hotel Belvedere during an annual visit and noted Rotary’s global strength. Four new members were welcomed: Dr Alan M Poole, Anthony S Thomas, James F Duffy, and Frank J Silvia.

Bristol County Sectional Bridge Tourney Draws Local Players

Contract bridge players from Barrington Providence and Pawtucket totaling twenty eight gathered last evening at Henry Wood's Union street home to participate in Bristol County sectional play of the World Bridge Olympic. Twenty eight players from Bristol Barrington and Pawtucket joined with others in 16 pre arranged hands to be scored later by the tournament committee. Girl Scout Council Names New Committees and Honors Leader

The Bristol Girl Scout Council held a meeting at Mrs. Fred M Dixon Jr home where new committees were named by Commissioner Mrs Henry Wood. Florence C Otten received weekend camp leader honors after special scouting work. The group discussed the Eastern Shore Leaders Association supper on Feb 20 and attended a regional camp conference at Cedar Hill Waltham Mass.

Skating Club Formed To Revive Local Youth Sports

Sidney Herreshoff was elected president of a newly organized skating club in Bristol. The group plans to seek use of the Excelsior Tennis Club grounds, flood the courts, and open them to all town children under supervision with officers Albert H Flint Jr as vice president Ernest G Brown as treasurer and C C Getchell as secretary.

Narrows Road Improves After Brush Clearing Effort

Summer residents will find Narrows road clearer when they return. Workers clear dense brush on both sides of the highway and burn debris to ease traffic. The State Unemployment Relief crew led by James B Lee oversees the effort and maintains 101 town catch basins.

Rev Arnold Gordon of Second African M E Zion Church will speak on Lincoln as a Leader at Civil War president birthday exercises. The program Sunday evening February 11 in DeWalf Memorial Chapel features a 20 voice choir from Gordon’s church and a Negro spirituals performance. Tony's Wedding in Bristol Draws Stormbound Audience

Several hundred Bristol theatergoers braved a severe storm for the premiere of Tony's Wedding at the Guiteras Memorial junior high auditorium. The Olympian Club presented the show with singing dancing and comedy under Jusephne F. Pannone and Edward Leclerc directing, with Sheriff James F. Meiggs handling stage lighting and Maxwell Phenes chairing arrangements. The production featured leading roles by Albert Pierce Nora E. Dwyer Viola Anderson Minnie Goglia and others. a repeat performance was planned for tonight.
