Holiday Hoop Meet Sees Four Collegiate Teams Compete

The Scholastics fell to the Mystics 55 to 45 while the Bookworms lost to the Gymnasts in yesterday's college games at the Y gym. Vacationing students formed four teams vying for a mythical championship in the final game this afternoon. standouts included Al Osterberg John Bernardo Slim Roderick Babe Fer rara and team rosters list numerous college players across Rhode Island Boston University Penn Springfield and others.

Separate Chapels To Be Used At Yawgoog

Separate tracts of land will be dedicated at Camp Yawgoog for Roman Catholic Protestant and Jewish worship. The Rhode Island Boy Scouts announced that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence and the Rhode Island Council of Churches accepted the offer, with plans for a rustic open sided chapel near the camp center to be ready for next summer. Father Delaney led Catholic fundraising and spoke of years as Catholic Chaplain.

Legion Heads Plan Annual Past Commanders Banquet

Commander Ralph De Leo of Kearney Post No. 6 proposes a February banquet at Midway Steak and Lobster House to honor all Past Commanders. He aims to foster unity between World War I and World War II veterans and says wall photographs of past commanders may be added at Legion headquarters on Franklin Street to inspire continued service.

Guiteras Athletic Events Attract 26000 In 1948

The annual Athletic Committee report shows total attendance at Guiteras athletic events for the past year reached about 26 000 with receipts of 1721 32 to the Field's fund. Expenditures totaled 764 98, net increase 956 34 added to 1261 20 for general maintenance and improvement of Guiteras Field. Total school department maintenance and operation costs for the year totaled 3293 62.

Xavier Reports Progress On Master Map Project

Xavier Jr a local engineer hired by the town announced at the Planning Board meeting that a new tracing of the master map is complete and replatted plats recently bought and resold have been redrawn. The threefold job covers the master map update Whitten Master Plan recommendations and future platting ordinances with a follow up meeting planned within a week. The board also recommended approval of Salvatore Nunes subdivision C plat and referred it to the Town Solicitor for study and council recommendation.

Biggest Mail In History Handled By Post Office

The town Post Office processed a Christmas season peak of 312000 pieces from December 1 to 24 using 40 workers, 22 more than usual. Wages rose to 1.29 dollars per hour, up 25 cents from last year as more mail and parcel packages arrived.

The Bristol Community Christmas Committee staged a joyous event as a helicopter carried Santa Claus to Memorial Junior High lawn. Lt Schauffer piloted the craft from Quonset Point to greet about 1,000 children and parents. Local officials and volunteers aided the distribution of gifts and candy, with Santa noting the warmer ride compared to a sled.

Children and adults celebrated a Hannukah party in the vestry of Chevra Agudas Achim Temple sponsored by the Temple and the Jewish Community Center. Recitations, motion pictures, group singing, and refreshments followed the program with prizes awarded to several participants. A Center business meeting is planned for this evening at 8.

Christmas Midnight Services Across Five Town Churches

Christmas eve services were held by five churches with Catholics and Episcopalians commemorating the birth of Christ. At Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Rev. Joseph Sorzana officiated the Midnight Mass with Deacon Joseph Nuns. St Elizabeth's Mass began at 11 45 pm led by Rev. Henrique Rocha, with Deacon Luiz A. Pacheco and Subdeacon Jose J Pimental. St Mary's offered midnight solemn Mass with Rev. Charles Curran and Rev. Paul Connelley as deacon. St Columban's Subdeacon was Rev. Aus tin J. Smith. St Michael's was led by Canon Darel K. Davis with a children’s service earlier. Trinity Church held midnight Mass by Rev. Thomas E. Little with morning Eucharist.

Barrington vs St Michael's Bristol opens 1948 Holiday Basketball Tourney

The 1948 Holiday Basketball Tournament for Bristol Warren and Barrington nine year olds begins tomorrow at 10 a m on the Y Court with Barrington facing St Michael's of Bristol. Matches run over three days with semi finals Thursday and a consolation Friday. Finals to be played January 1 at 2 p m as part of Open House.
