History to Music in Cavalcade of America
Don Voorhees, noted conductor and head of several air-shows, becomes musical director for The Cavalcade of America radio feature. He explains the challenge of setting history to music by creating a background that guides dialogue and action without interrupting flow, selecting period-appropriate moods from a catalog of 3000 scores, and portraying psychological aspects of eras rather than strict historical musical styles. He aims to fuse American history with epic, stirring music and sees a future day when such symphonic treatment becomes a norm.
