The Senior Class of Bristol High School will lead a house to house canvass beginning Monday to support the Red Cross War Fund in Bristol. Charles B. Rockwell will head the Industrial Division and F. Reginald Dimond the Special Gifts committee, with Rev. A R Parshley praising the student effort and patriotism.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services detailed at St Marys St Michaels and St Elizabeths. Soloists choir rosters and organists listed with mass times and processions. Recessional and offertory selections include Adeste Fideles Silent Night Hark the Herald Angels Sing and O Come All Ye Faithful.
Edmund S. Rex announces Bristol Branch American Red Cross plans a mobile canteen service with John H. Harris as lead designer and Giuseppe Tedesco as assistant. Harris formerly served as Mess Sergeant for Battery A 103rd Field Artillery and Tedesco spent 15 years as a US Navy cook. First aid classes were held at Ever Ready Engine and Hose Company with Archie P. Allen teaching. Albert H. Flint Jr. is named vice chairman of the disaster committee organization.
A last minute appeal for prompt payment of Christmas Seals totals 800 dollars to date, 200 dollars short of Bristol’s goal. Booth at Bristol Post Office reports strong returns. other sources weak. The drive, run by Evelyn C Carter and supervised by Mrs Nathaniel G Herreshoff, opens a pneumothorax tuberculosis clinic December 27 at Martin House in Warren for patients from East Providence, Warren, Barrington and surrounding towns.
Three fishermen were rescued from a leaking 26 foot power boat on Town Pond in Portsmouth after spending the night in near freezing conditions. Jo seph Lopes aged 27 Edward Sousa 16 and Manuel Sousa were saved by Sousa's father Frank Sousa who used his own boat to reach them. They had to endure a cold night with a stove improvised from an oil can for warmth. Two other fishermen reached shore in a skiff and reported the incident to the State Police barracks in Portsmouth. Coast Guard assistance was requested but unavailable due to other duties.
Canon Parshley head of the Red Cross in Bristol reports five sewing machines are in, three more are needed for the Eugenia Paull House at 700 Hope Street. A long smooth cutting table for gauze bandages is requested along with filing cabinets and a usable typewriter.
Bristol advances in a town wide emergency survey led by O Paul Herzig and Robert Lanphear with 60 percent responses and 106 volunteers. An appeal seeks 16 more volunteers to cover homes not yet visited and collect data on reception evacuation and equipment for potential military distress.
Two Bristol mothers, Mrs Leslie I. Young and Mrs Antone Mello, celebrate after receiving word their sons in United States forces in Hawaii are safe. Alfred Mello, Coast Artillery, sent a cablegram saying Everything is Fine Have a merry Christmas, while Seaman First Class Charles Young wrote not to worry and praised American unity. Young, four years in the Navy, had served in China with the Asiatic fleet before Hawaii.
Bristol public schools close today for Christmas recess and will reopen January 5. St. Mary’s Parish School also closes Friday and will resume sessions the same day as the public schools.
Miss Gilda Crignalé of Providence a December bride-elect was guest of honor at a shower by Mrs. Michael Campagna at 93 Bradford Street. Guests came from Bristol Providence Esmond and Georgiaville. A social hour and refreshments followed with many gifts for the honoree who will wed December 30 to Vincent M Campagna a medical technician in the United States Army and son of the host.
First National Stores will close at 7 p m Christmas Eve to let employees be with families. Headquarters says to shop early, with stores open Tuesday until 9 30 p m, then all doors close at 7 p m sharp on Wednesday the 24th.
