An 1778 Raid on Bristol Neck vivid in local memory
The article recalls Lieut. Col. Campbell and Hessian troops landing at Peck's Rocks in October 1778. British forces burned boats, a church, a mill, and other property along the Bristol Neck and Kirkemuit, while residents and farmers reacted with fear and small acts of defiance. A young marksman Bowen fired on them as they advanced toward Warren, and a drummer and an officer were wounded. The raid ended with British embarks and a cautious pursuit by Col. Barton’s American force.
