Rev. A R Parshley presented Mark Twain stories at St Michael’s Church parish house under the Ladies Benevolent Society. Readings included Huckleberry Finn Tom Sawyer and Was Solomon Wise with Mrs N G Herreshoff Jr contributing vocal selections to an appreciative audience.
Contributions to the American Legion Christmas Basket Fund are slowly arriving as Bristol residents are asked to provide meals for needy families. Donors are urged to send money or checks to B W Wall at 539 Hope Street or 37 Cook Street, with acknowledgments in the column.
A son was born on December 9 in Detroit to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hobbs. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Hobbs of this town.
George C Clarke secretary and manager of the Pawtucket Chamber of Commerce urges strong active committees as the backbone of chamber work. He cites 19 committees, a proactive board, and civic pride as essential to building a healthy economy and community.
The Parish Aid Society of traits Church held its Christmas sale in the church parish house with a lively turnout. Decorations matched the season as patrons purchased fancy articles candy and pastries while tea was served. Organizers included Mrs Samuel C Wardwell Mrs Frank Burdick Mrs Frank M Gifford and others chaired by Mrs Richard R Cornell with assistance from Mrs John Grabert.
The Rev. Herbert D. Graetz to deliver Sunday 10 30 a m sermon on if Jesus had not been born. Men’s Class met last Sunday with a 12 noon session. Annual carol service at 7 30 p m in DeWolf Chapel. Good Will Industry Committee continues clothing aid requests. Men’s Union supper and entertainment Monday at 6 30 p m.
Rotary Club members met in a lively session led by Howard R Newman with presiding officer John R Mageett absent. Amid motions and amendments a record of decisions shows a 50 cent per member Christmas Dinner Fund, a December 24 Christmas Party, gift donations to Wallum Lake Children's Hospital, and sponsorship of a Christmas Tree in front of Colt High School.
Brown University head football coach Tuss McLaughry spoke at the Rotary Club noting obedience and self control as key lessons for players. He stressed mindset as the main factor, saying a proper frame of mind can boost performance by about 50 percent. He advised milder conditioning like tennis or golf over heavy year round labor.
