Kearney Post Opposes Providence Veterans Bureau Closure

The Kearney Post No. 6 of the American Legion in Rhode Island joins other posts in opposing the plan to close the Providence United States Veterans' Bureau and consolidate with Boston. Local leaders urge retention, with support from Senators Metcalf and Hebert and Congressman Condon. The post also plans Christmas baskets for the needy and reports new members and a record high paid-up membership, plus tributes to Private Kearney of the USS Jacob Jones.

Deserving Family Seeks Wheelchair Aid This Christmas

A Bristol family requests help for a crippled wife of eight years and mother of four. The husband works but struggles to feed, clothe, and cover medical bills. Tuberculosis Clinics in Bristol

Bristol District Nursing Association runs regular free clinics with chest exams by specialists, X rays, and von Pirquet tests for children. The tuberculin test helps locate disease early. 14 clinics last year reached 217 examined and 103 von Pirquet tests were performed, funded by Christmas Seals and Health Bonds.

Bristol Mfg Co Files Reorganization Petition in Rhode Island

Bristol Manufacturing Co filed a reorganization petition under the National Bankruptcy Act amendment in U S District Court Providence Rhode Island. Judge Ira Lloyd Letts accepted the petition allowing continued business. A plan is due by December 27 with no new borrowing without court consent. Plant currently not operating.

Railroad weighing lower fares on Prov Bristol line

New Haven Railroad and Bristol County Committee consider a reduced fare plan to Providence halving the rate to 5 cents per zone, potentially 20 cents one way Bristol to Providence. Possible discontinuation of Bristol Providence buses. Newport buses may serve outlying districts. Terminal at Brayton station with bus transfer to Fall River. Committee says lower fares must keep the service paying and opposes too frequent schedules.

Bristol council to act on school grant plan for new memorial high

Bristol Town Council will hold a special session to decide on a resolution from the School Committee to request a financial town meeting for a Federal PWA grant to fund the Andrews Memorial High School. The grant now equals 30 percent of construction costs. a $100,000 estate gift is in hand and a further $40,000 may come.

Public Bingo for Children Aids Local Benevolence

The Bristol Portuguese American Civic League held a public bingo a Saturday evening in Lincoln hall Usher avenue to aid one hundred fifty needy town children. Proceeds fund a Christmas party planned for December 23 with Marion Coite leading the bingo committee and assistants Rose George Wilhelmina Silvia Mary George Gilda de Costa and Helen Dennis.
