Mrs Mary Sassano of Bronx after reading her son Michael’s letter about cold heads in Korea organized a helmet project. Twelve women knitted twenty four khaki wool helmets in two weeks, then shipped them to Korea. The effort drew widespread interest with many mothers requesting patterns and instructions.
