The Bristol Yacht Club hosts its annual open regatta with 100 to 150 entries expected under race chairman Francois de Wolf. Regatta runs tomorrow with 24 classes starting at 2 pm using Narragansett Bay Yachting Association rules and a 1:50 warning gun.
John W. DeWolf Jr a longtime local civic figure was named vice-chairman of the forthcoming Community Chest fund campaign by Lester Gurney III chairman for 1955. He previously served as a major in the residential division and held roles with the school committee Kearney Post American Legion St Michael's Church St Alban's Lodge the historical society and the YMCA.
Engineers begin work on the Nike launcher site at the Ferry with Ferber Construction of Hackensack NJ overseeing excavations starting Tuesday or Wednesday. The radar and launcher facilities at Mt Hope and the Ferry, respectively, must be finished within 225 days with occupation expected next spring by over 100 personnel. The project, costing about 800000 dollars, covers 2538 acres with easements on about 40 surrounding acres.
A total of 551 has been donated to the Red Cross Flood Relief Fund to date announced by Mrs Clara L Diman executive secretary of the local branch. Donors include Mrs R F Haffenreffer Jr 200 James P Byrnes 10 and many others listed with various small gifts.
Dr Samir Clark Drury Clark former Bristol town council president accepts role as chief marshal for the 275th anniversary parade the Founders Day main event on Saturday Sept 24 announced by Paul Millemaggi and Jeremiah Romano. Clark a native of Maint educated at Kent Harvard trained physician served in the 48th Evacuation Hospital unit in WWII and later returned to Bristol as health officer and community leader.
Flood relief efforts in Woonsocket expand as residents and Bristol Manufacturing Corp employees donate cash clothing food bedding and furniture. A Red Cross fund nears the $1 000 goal while two trailer trucks from U S Rubber Co and local groups collect and sort goods for distribution officials report strong community support and a touching charity moment from Bay View youngsters with a wicker basket of clothes.
Donations of food clothing furniture and bedding should be taken to the Andrews School between 9 am and 4 45 pm today and tomorrow. Donations of money may be mailed to the Bristol Branch Red Cross care of the Post Office or left at the Phoenix Office.
Civil Defense teams and volunteers collect and sort clothing and household goods for Woonsocket relief. Mary E. Pereira and Regina Charley lead efforts at the Andrews School while Bristol Women's Club and Highlands residents donate canned goods and assist with loads to the trailer trucks.
The King Philip Little League All-Stars defeated the Farm Team All-Stars 10-2 at Veterans Memorial Park. Murgo hit a three RBI triple in the fifth inning for the Little Leaguers. A hot dog roast for Bristol Little Leaguers is set for Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Dr. Anthony J. Ramos’s home on Griswold Avenue with transport from the courthouse steps at 5 p.m.
