Fire Chief Fred Guevremont ordered a maximum speed of 35 miles per hour for fire trucks to and from alarms. He urged captains of four volunteer companies to cooperate in a drive with care plan after citing a Philadelphia crash injuring 35. Former Fire Chief Anderson supported the plan.
William Bradford former Bristol Phoenix manager died at 736 Hope Street after a long illness at age 64. A direct descendant of Governor William Bradford he served as Memorial Day secretary since 1898 and was in the Sons of Union Veterans. Survived by wife Eliza Diman Nichols Bradford daughter Laurine Wheaton Bradford two half brothers and several nieces. Funeral 2:30 pm tomorrow from his home with Rev. Robert N Turner officiating at North Cemetery. Burial follows. Bradford joined the United States Navy in the Spanish American War and was a former member of Bristol Train of Artillery. He was born January 16 1876 in Providence.
The Frost Kings and Olympians will meet Thursday evening at Common in a replay of a recent tie. Olympians pitcher John Marshall and catcher Joe Borges face Frost Kings options Joe Benevides or Tommy Wan oast with Marty Biancuzzo behind the plate. The Olympians are the only team to defeat the 1939 champions, having beaten the Ever Readys in each of their three losses.
Committees for the Collins and Aikman Girls Club Field Day to be held Saturday are announced by Mrs. Marguerite Hill. The St Rita Society announces a lawn party on September 13 and 16 at the rear grounds of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Lucy Matsano chairs the general arrangements with Josephine Russo as co chair and a list of volunteers assisting including Mary Florenzano Lucy Margo Mary Turillo Catherine Camera Lindy Perri Christine Camera Philippa Perri Caroline Squatrito Madeline Del Toro Anna Panzarella and Anna Matrone ex officio.
A memorial band concert honoring the late Dr. Alfred M. Merriman will be held Sunday evening August 27 at Colt Memorial High School. Mrs Theresa Donovan directs with John W Haley as master of ceremonies. The program includes Overture of Overtures Friml favorites and The Star Spangled Banner with donations from committee members.
A A Edmonds and Domenic Mascola of Bristol are named as delegates to the American Legion National Convention in Chicago on Sept 21 to 24. Edmonds represents the department while Mascola serves the second district Kearney Post Bristol unit.
The Cup Defenders clinched the 1939 boccia championship in a best two of three series against the Sportsman's Club of Warren. They won 12-1 at the Democrat Club grounds in Barrington after losing 12-3 in Bristol, then tying 12-7 at Brazil Park in Warren. Team members include Lous Alfano Jerome Cadile Peter Cristada Salvadore Mascena and Felix Precioso.
The Bristol Yacht Club will host a motion picture evening for members and guests this Saturday in the clubhouse. Jack Woods presents scenes from Larchmont Race Week including footage aboard the 12 meter Nyala. Prof George C. Owen of MIT will introduce Mr Wood.
Bristol police plan their third annual ball to be held October 27 at the new Bristol Casino. General chair William T. Cashin leads the committee with A. Michael Bullock as vice chair and Euclid J. Demers as treasurer. Proceeds boost the police pension fund, now over 4000 dollars, aided by town appropriations and private donations.
The Ever Readys defeated the Frost Kings 2 to 1 in a shortened 5 2 3 inning game at Bristol Common last night clinching the 1939 Twilight crown. Sousa pitched well for the Ever Readys while Benevides held the Frost Kings to six hits, but two errors in the sixth inning produced the decisive runs.
Angelo DiCanni, 20, on Sherry Avenue, again did not answer a larceny charge in Fifth District Court. Judge William T O'Donnell continued the case two weeks. A committee to arrange the annual outing on September 10 was named by the Recordacoes da Patria Club. The event will be at Hilltop Farm Metacom Avenue with state and town officials and Portuguese American leaders in attendance. Members are John Frazee Vieira, Joseph George, Anthony H. Alfred, Joseph Bragantin, Manuel Fernandes, Edmund Xavier, Davis and Antonio Cabr al ex officio. The club is the oldest local Portuguese organization with about 200 members.
Army officials emphasize public briefing on First Army maneuvers near Plattsburg New York. Major General Hugh A Drum warns rapid troop movements alone do not guarantee victory and that ground battle skill remains essential for final decision in modern warfare.
