Call for 40 Recruits To Battery C 243rd Artillery

Captain Albert Moren of Battery C 243rd Artillery issues a call for 40 single recruits by September 15 as the local unit prepares for federal service. Enlistees may apply at the State Armory on Monday Wednesday or Friday evenings. Moren notes faster advancement for early enlistment and cites Battery C’s long record of excellence and close home-area service near Narragansett Bay with a 76-man roster.

Reception Planned Here For New Citizens

A September reception for Bristol area new American citizens is organized by the WPA Americanization Department. Over 160 adults attend Bristol classes at Reynolds School twice weekly, with a women’s class in the afternoons. Classes cover English reading and writing, arithmetic, citizenship and government. Mary McHugh oversees the program, offering free help with naturalization papers.

Bristol Night tribute set on WEAN radio

Boys Honored At Surprise Birthday Party

A double surprise birthday party was held for Manuel Mello and Edmund Cardoza at United Boys' Club rooms on Constitution Street. Guests enjoyed gifts, games, refreshments, dancing, and a scavenger hunt ending with cake.

Brother of Bristol Resident Killed in Croydon Air Raid

William Pinch of North Farm and Bristol Rotary Club reports his brother Lewis Pinch of Reigate died from injuries in a Croydon area air raid. Lewis served four years in World War I, was in business, and is survived by a 16 year old daughter and a son in active war service.

British War Relief Society Ships More Funds for Britain

Robert R. Appleby, chairman, announced the society had cabled over 10000 to Great Britain for seamen canteens and children's clothing. Donations include 3820 for canteens in Grimsby Lerwick and Methil, 4000 for rubber boots, 2000 for children's boots, 980 for cigarettes and 180 for hard candy. Bristol Branch reports generous boxes from listed donors and thanks are extended.

Cup Defenders Hold Annual Outing

The Cup Defenders Association held its fifth annual outing at Swift's Point with over 100 members and guests. In boccia, Albert DiMezza led a winning team over Antonio Cupolo's squad, with Albert Quito James Munoio Angelo Mascena Felix Prezioso and Elia Guisti. The losing boccia team included John Bisbano Harvey Gladue Domenic Proto Rudolph Sousa Louis DiLello and Joseph Rich. Tug of war ended in a draw after married and single men each won one trial. The arrangements committee was John Langello Joseph Rich Raymond Bisbane and Mathew Capone Sr ex officio.

Rod and Gun Club Field Day Set for Sept. 8

East Warren Rod and Gun Club announces its annual field day at the club grounds on Sunday September 8 rain or shine. Events include trap and skeet shooting hand gun matches for police banks and civilians dog show target dove rock and turkey shooting and a Rhode Island clam bake. Registration of Aliens Opens August 27 in Bristol

Postmaster Daniel W. Coggeshall announces that registration and fingerprinting of aliens fourteen and older will begin Tuesday August 27 and run to December 26 unless extended. Home visits may be arranged for elderly or infirm individuals with confidential handling of all data.

Destroyer Transfer Group To Meet Tomorrow Night

Divisional chairmen of the Bristol Committee for the Transfer of Destroyers to Great Britain will hold their first meeting tomorrow evening at Kearney Post headquarters on Franklin street. Plans center on a mass meeting and bringing speakers of national importance to Bristol. The petition form for signatures will also be addressed. Edmund S. Rex says chairmen appointments are nearly complete and sub-committees will be listed soon.

Obituary Mrs Laura Ericsson

Word has been received of the death last week of Mrs Laura Teller Ericsson wife of Lt Hampton M Ericsson U S Navy. Death followed pneumonia after a week's illness at her mother Maud Griffin's home in Rensenburg Long Island. Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late Dr Harry Teller and Mrs Griffin. She lived here with her parents for years. their residence was at High and Bradford streets.
