Bristol Zoning Board of Review set September 11 for Sousa brothers and DuPonts 40 acre Gooding Avenue tract rezoning to industrial H and September 17 for Brito and DaPonte land between Wood and Chestnut streets. The board will study a Planning Board proposal to designate 70 acres north of Metacom Avenue and along Gooding Avenue as an industrial area. a Dixon Lubricating Saddle Co plant site is included.
Dixon Lubricating Saddle Co. will build on Gooding Avenue at the Sousa property, rejecting the Mahoney 75 acre site. The company needs only 3 acres, plans a septic system, and cites future growth but says no 1000 employee boom will occur immediately. A Sept. 11 public hearing will consider industrial zoning for the Sousa land.
The Bristol Council Knights of Columbus held its annual clam bake on Sunday at St. Columban's Seminary grounds with 200 persons in attendance. Victor Formisano directed the bake as bakemaster and committee chairman, with James J. Connery Jr. as ticket chairman and a long list of committee members including Domenic L. Altrui, Martin Biancuzzo, Charles Burns Jr., Frank Balzano, Michael Biancuzzo, Louis Castriotta, and many others.
A large fire on Hope Street destroyed the cabinet shop of John Mulchahey and three adjoining buildings in Bristol. Firefighters confined flames to the block as residents faced loss and officials considered reorganizing the town fire department.
About 2000 people attended the weekend Feast of the Blessed Sacrament at St Elizabeth Church. Bombs from Rego Farm punctuated the two days as processions with the Sacred Host, masses, a war dead memorial, benedictions, and band concerts were held. Clergy included Rev Henrique Rocha, Rev Luiga Pacheco, Rev Virgilio Oliveira, Rev Manuel Rocha, Rev Albino Martin, who led the solemn mass and procession.
The finishing and weatherproofing department of the U S Rubber Company held its annual outing Sunday at Sousa's picnic grove off Dartmouth Street. Chaurice sandwiches were served from 10 to 3 and a chicken dinner followed at 5. The boccia contest winning team was led by captain Joseph Morra and included John Mello Joe DaPonte Joe Motta and Angelo Vecchio.
The Flower Hobby Show sponsored by the First Congregational Chaviet featured entries that celebrated beauty and originality. Judge selection named 31 winners as spectators admired displays, including the Nadeau hand loom highlighted by organizer Mrs. Joseph Robinson.
Finals in the horseshoe tournament at Bristol's playground will be held all day tomorrow with singles and doubles champions for girls and boys across three divisions. Veterans Memorial Park will be closed for the event. Naomi Sousa directs the girls, while A A Pansa and Andrew Bozzario oversee the boys.
The town charter process nears final approval after a series of meetings. The charter would create a town manager administrator and nonpartisan elections, with November 4 ballot placement. Commission Chairman Jannsen will confer with critics today and report back August 27.
The retreat committee from Catholic churches in Bristol Warren and Barrington will gather at Warren Institute Hall near St Marys Warren to advance Bristol County plans for the September diocesan retreat. The men’s retreat runs September 5 to 7 at the diocesan retreat house Narragansett with Rev Joseph Bracq as speaker.
