Residents favor placing the town beach north of Colt Drive off Asylum Road praised for natural sand and low costs. One speaker urged action to make the project a town recreation credit, noting Lot No. 81 north of the Drive as the site.
Fire destroyed the Dreadnaught Hook Ladder and Hose Company station at High and Church streets about three o clock yesterday morning with only the ladder truck and hose carriage saved. Firemen, led by William and Robert J. McCaughey, dragged the trunk out as flames consumed the main building while water pressure improved after calls to Warren for pumps. By 3:30 the structure was reduced to charred timbers and ashes as crowds gathered and neighboring buildings were protected.
Four Rhode Island newspaper editors will chair a new TV series on WJAR Providence Sundays 7 to 7 30 pm. The premiere will feature Alden Poole of the Bristol Phoenix and Charles Utter of the Westerly Sun with Emil Jemail of the Newport Daily News and Zelmar Levin of the Rhode Island Press Club guiding discussion on Rent Control Primary Laws Relief Rolls opening of the state’s newsmaking topics. Mayor Darius Goff of Warwick will attend the first program centered on the Inter-Community Conference.
Warwick's Little League all stars, state playoff champions in Bristol, added the Southern Mass R J title with a 3 0 win over Fall River Federal League at Veterans Park Little League field. Milt Bell pitched a one hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Almost 500 reservations are reported for St Marys Parish ham and potato salad dinner and parish outing on St Columbans seminary grounds. The event marks the first major parish outing in years with committees named for cake and hot dog booths and additional helpers led by Chairman David J Ferris.
V J Day festivities will start with a community block dance at 8 on the common under playground staff supervision. The Town Board met Tuesday to arrange supervision and address vandalism including water bottle tampering and damaged equipment.
The Salvation Army starts its 1953 Bristol appeal with a $1500 quota announced by local chairman Robert W. Nelson. He urged immediate responses by mail to fund local services including day nursery camps boys clubs and a Family Service Bureau, emphasizing funds stay in the community. The drive is part of a New England effort supporting shelters meals clothing and various programs for the needy and veterans.
Collins and Aikman workers at Bristol plants H and J and Barrington Plant K chose representation by the CIO Textile Workers Union 639 to 398 after ballots prepared by NLRB examiners John R. Coleman and Joseph C. Barry. Five voided and 56 challenged ballots noted.
The Voigt Wright and Slade firm said it will wait for town council instructions before pursuing Bristol byfield lands valued at about 200000 and yielding 1069 yearly in rents. The Dexter Asylum decision in Providence prompted restraint as attorneys await further action and possible appeals.
The Bristol Narrows Association social committee met to plan a Teen Lawn Party on Sunday, August 23 chaired by Mrs. Earl A. Head. Volunteers listed for home made articles, pastries, white elephant, food and refreshments, games, and entertainment include numerous helpers led by Mrs. Head and Mrs. Siliva with Howard Dawson as sport director organizing prize games. Pony rides are a special feature. children may contact Dawson to participate.
Thirty entries and fifty nine entrants filled the Bristol playground as children showcased pets including rabbits, goats, a parrot, dogs, cats, and a duckling. Prizes included Best Show, cutest critter, and humorous ribbons with winners named among the participants and their families.
The First Baptist Church will air a half hour religious service on WPRO this Sunday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Pastor Walter Bene will speak and Mrs. Sidney Kullberg will sing, with Mrs. Earl Sturdevant at the organ. The program features selections by Willis and Guilmant.
