Francis S. Connery a 21 year old PhM US Navy corpsman of Garfield Ave is awarded the Bronze Star for fearless initiative and leadership on Iwo Jima while serving with the 14th Marines 4th Marine Division He aided two wounded men under heavy fire and helped evacuate them The citation notes his four years in service and prior campaigns including Kwajalein Saipan Tinian and the Presidential Unit Citation for Saipan and Iwo Jima
The Bristol Town Council calls a special financial town meeting for September 17 to appropriate 35000 for a beach project at Rockwell Park or a 35000 pool option, plus funds for sewer repairs and the Sanitary Sewer Investigation Committee. Substantial reports from Hubert Hull and Anthony DuPont shape the debate.
Bristol salvage committee approves funding to create a supervised swimming area at Rockwell Park with a lifeguard salary paid through summer. Bristol residents Joseph M Levere and Edward N Monahan are identified as workers on the atomic bomb project at the New Mexico plant. Levere previously worked for General Electric in Lynn Massachusetts and is linked to Mrs John A Tobin and Catherine W Levere. Monahan is married to Hope M N Cote of Byfield Street and formerly worked at Newport Naval Station.
The United States Rubber Company announced large material supplies for the atomic bomb. Officials said the War Department would not disclose what materials or where they were produced. Most work on the secret project occurred between July and October 1944.
Pvt Andrew H Noronha son of Mr and Mrs Andrew A Noronha of 719 Hope Street arrived home Wednesday afternoon after a two year absence. He was a German prisoner from September 11 1943 to May 4 1945. He was first reported missing in action and is believed captured at Salerno Italy. He entered the Army in February 1942.
Pfc Joseph J Sansone of 7 Bay View avenue recently returned home on leave. A cannonier, he served in the European Theatre of Operations earning the Combat Infantry Badge the Purple Heart the Good Conduct Medal a Presidential Unit Citation and the ETO ribbon. He took part in the battles of northern France the Ardennes Rhineland and Central Europe. Prior to service he was a printer.
Francis Bellamy explains how the pledge was crafted in 1892 while seeking a unifying national creed. He describes choosing Republic over nation and the three word core one Nation indivisible Liberty and justice for all. The piece notes later changes to the phrase to include United States and the shift in salute practice to place the hand over the heart.
