A Bristol Phoenix campaign offers $15 for the top new subscription money and $10 for second place this week, with $50 and $25 prizes for the two-week period ending August 17. Every dollar counts toward both cash prizes and extra votes, with details at the Phoenix office or by phone.
The St Marys parish fund benefit lawn fete runs tonight and tomorrow on the Knights of Columbus grounds at State Street. Parishioners manage booths. three horse racing tracks operate all evening. women serve chowder tonight from 5 to 7 30 while tomorrow features a frankfurter roast.
A mob of 50 or more interfered with a BT A bingo party in the Armory yard on State Street by throwing pebbles toward the tables. After repeated requests to stop were ignored, police restored order and PTA planned added protection for future weekly bingo events.
The Northfield Scholarship fund benefited from a bridge whist conducted last night by Alpha Chapter. Christan Fadeaser at the General House. The sponsoring committee included Misses Jessie Sanford Ethelyn Pray Parbara Huestis Fleanor Rae and Vernon Otten Frie Bense and Addison Hall.
Two Bristol girls, Nances Bosworth and Clara Harmon, registered at Camp Hoffman for the period from August to 29. They are enrolled in a program featuring water sports swimming camp cookery hiking and activities in handcraft nature and dramatics.
J Burleigh Cheney, state WPA head, described new Works Progress Administration plans to the Town Council. He said the program aims to provide one year of work for unemployed skilled and unskilled workers, with wages that oppose dole. The council adopted projects, reviewed water and harbor concerns, and prepared for an Armistice day program while addressing sewer and pension matters.
The Bristol branch of United States Rubber Products Inc plans a park outing tomorrow at Crescent Park to feature a Providence versus Bristol plant baseball game. About 700 attendees are expected, with an athletic program, shore dinner, and midway attractions. The Providence team, led by Elmer Duggan, features Hyman Verbeck Werbeck Earle and others. Bristol's US Royals will be coached by Andy D Ambrosio with Leo Mansi catching and a full infield and outfield lineup. A secret portion of the program is being arranged by James A Sisson and a committee of plant officials and managers.
The Court of Honor and Board of Awards convene tomorrow afternoon at Camp Takarest at 330 pm for the final summer session. Col A Cheesman will preside as officials and local Troop Scouts may receive many awards.
Members and candidates of the Bristol County Safety Council Life Saving Corps will meet at the Town Beach this evening at 7 for a drill and practice for the regatta later this month. All crew members and candidates to be examined next week are asked to report.
Hope Circle No 70 of Daughters of Isabella will hold a hot dog roast next Tuesday on the shore adjacent to St. Columbans Seminary Bristol Ferry Miss Winifred C Walsh chairs the arrangements committee with assistants Misses Helen A Condon Geraldine Marino Nora E Dwyer and Mrs Alice L Sylvia ex officio as part of the event planning
Bristol swung to the Republican side as Judge Charles F. Risk won by 256 votes over Antonio Prince for Congress. The town approved the Fourth Unemployment Relief Loan and state loans but rejected the Soldiers Home Loan. Voter turnout reached 62 percent of 424 eligible, with Risk securing gains in the Second District and a narrow First District loss for Prince.
The general committee met at the Hotel Belvedere and approved further works for the new community athletic field. Ed ward J Fitzgerald presided as Colt Memorial High school principal. The panel ratified buying 2300 yards of brick from Golde r Aiehotlad for base and fill at 230. The group also authorized about 300 for additional rough fill and a 2100 fence around the area. Domenic Mascola said the retaining wall behind Guiteras Junior high will run 2000 feet, four feet high, dry construction, awaiting federal approval.
T S Mathews of Newport defeated William M Fischer of New York in a straight set 6 3 6 3 6 4 at the Excelsior Tennis Club to claim the open Bristol County Championship and gain his first set on the Robert Wo Nelson Cup.
Ancient Mount Hope hosted a Bristol Girl Scout Council day camp with about 30 local scouts. Activities included swimming crafts songs games pioneering and cooking under joint supervision of Mrs Albert H Flint Jr and Mrs Ralph Kinder. Other visitors included regional and council leaders as well as troop heads guiding transport and instruction. Another camp will be held Tuesday.
Aug 15 the Ivy Guild of St. Michael's Church hosts an annual supper and sale in the Parish House. Proceeds support church activities and community outreach.
Five members and guests gathered for the Rotary Club annual outing at John G. Des Laurier's Bristol Neck property on a Wednesday afternoon. J deRocha chaired the committee. After luncheon the group enjoyed horse racing, card games, horseshoe pitching and boccia with Octave LeClair preparing the bake.
The Bristol Council No. 379 Knights of Columbus refined plans for the August 25 clambake outing at St. Columban Seminary. Grand Knight William T. Dwyer leads, and installation ceremonies postponed to a later date.
The First Congregational Church holds its annual outing for members and guests tomorrow afternoon at Ferrycliffe Farm on Mt Hope Bay shores. Samuel J. Steen chairs the committee. A prize awaits the society with the largest representation, with transportation provided from the Guiteras House.
Six young guests gathered yesterday at the Murray home on Wood Street to celebrate William Murray’s sixth birthday with games and musical entertainment. Relishes and treats were served by Mrs Murray assisted by Mrs Frank Renieres and Miss Gertrude and Emily Battcher.
