The 10th Annual Policemen's Ball on September 26 at New Highland Casino will bolster the town's Police Pension Fund. The fund gains $500 yearly from the town and relies largely on support from industries, businesses, stores, and residents.
Kearney Post No. 6 American Legion passes a four point plan backing temporary veterans housing over permanent projects. Ralph M. DeLeo leads the proposal condemning the Wagner Ellender Taft bill and Wyatt Housing program while urging a construction moratorium except for veterans housing and health or safety needs. The plan calls for a 10 percent rent increase to offset higher costs and will be sent to the national convention in San Francisco.
Mr and Mrs John Chionchio of Sherry Avenue announce the engagement of their daughter Dorothy to Anthony Perry son of Mr and Mrs Frank Perry of 82 Miles Avenue East Providence.
Kearney Post No. 6 of the American Legion voted to invite Anthony C. Almeida Post to join in Bristol in forming a Veterans Council. The council would provide a common meeting ground for all veterans to discuss matters of concern. A three member committee from both posts would form the council, with future invitations to other veterans groups in Bristol.
The State Office of Price Administration sent a revised dollar and cent list to Rhode Island grocers reducing covered items from 750 to about 350. The move reflects subsidies withdrawn and mandatory price changes under the extended Price Control Act. Retailers must use 422 and 423 maximum price rules for items not in the list and post the new ceilings where customers can read them.
World War II veterans Sgt Peter Cavalieri and Ralph T Church were endorsed by the Republican Town Committee for First and Second District seats. The committee reviewed candidates, named interview panels, and elected new members while honoring resignations.
Kearney Post 6 of the American Legion nominated Robert B Suzman for commander at a Friday night meeting. Also named were Norman Gravin Ralph DeLeo William Hall Fred Garvin George Fish Albert Edmonds Domenic Mascola Bertram Wall for various posts and a three man committee for beach condemnation study. A town flag display on V J Day and a $5 Salvation Army donation were approved. Election of officers set for September 6.
The Portuguese Independent Club and Band announce their 27th annual clambake on Sunday August 25 at Rego's Farm Bay View Avenue A. A sports program features a softball game between married and single men, foot races, and a tug of war with invitations sent to state and town officials. Arrangements chief Anthony E. Williams is assisted by Louis S. Barboza secretary John F. Castro Anthony Rodrigues Dennis Pacheco Manuel Pacheco and Joseph da Ponte Jr ex officio.
The two day Bristol County Camp-O-Bee at Camp King Philip closed with First Bristol Troop, Boy Scouts of America, scoring 16 points to take overall swimming and event honors. Michael Flynn led Troop 1 Blues in key races, with Matteo Castigliego and Reginald Brown among top finishers for Troop 4 and Troop 5. Leaders from Sea Scout Ship Admiral Edwards and the Narragansett Councils oversaw events while Troop 1 lifeguards aided safety.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel parishioners held a Sunday field day at Mintura Farm with over 1200 attendees. Ralph M De Leo won a Kelvinator refrigerator, William Ferrara a washing machine, and Anthony Marine a platform rocker. Nunziato DiPasquale led the bocce team to victory with Salvatore Masceno Louis Stanzione Stephen Castigliego and John Scolaro. runners up included Santo Pante Alphonse Rebello Salvatore DePasquale Andrew Del Toro and Anthony Masceno. The event committee was chaired by Louis Alfano with Rev Emilio Donanzan as secretary and James J. Velleca as treasurer.
Employees of the Sunset Bakery were guests of owner Manuel Ribeiro for the ninth annual Sunday outing at Acushnet Park New Bedford. Ribeiro chartered a bus and treated everyone to a shore dinner with swimming baseball and amusements enjoyed by all.
A tall Kentucky boy in 1943 suffers a severe ear infection at Jefferson Barracks. Despite surgeries and early penicillin shortages, treatment at Walter Reed and hospital staff saves him. His father, proud and grateful, reflects on the lack of local medical facilities and calls for a proper war memorial hospital.
