The Wednesday session approved sidewalk repairs on Hope Street and granted tar and granolithic walk petitions on Thames State and High streets. Officials reported about 2000 left in the sidewalk fund. other items included licensing, town asylum windows, and sewer deed updates.

Tennis championship postponed amid weather delay

Miss Melle Hamill the state champion was to meet Miss Jule Brown of Newport in the title match but the final was moved to this afternoon weather permitting. Helena Case and Paull D Howe captured the Bristol County mixed doubles cup Tuesday afternoon defeating Mollie Hamill and Henry Barton Jr in three sets on the Excelsior Courts.

Roy Cooke of Bristol County Gas and Electric Company burned about the face at Thames street gas plant after opening a manhole cover. Richard Stuart of Stuart and Tattrie blacksmiths was bruised and scalded when a water-filled pipe exploded in the forge, injuring his abdomen and right forearm.

Little Mothers League Redecorates Court Street School House

The Little Mothers League redecorates the Court Street school interior and installs a miniature kitchenette dining room and nursery. Fifteen girls applied the first coat of paint yesterday and a final coat today as they prepare to illustrate personal hygiene and baby care talks led by Nurse Selle. The group, with sixty to seventy members, meets Tuesdays at two and welcomes visiting mothers.

Fire companies held monthly meetings with voting on fair attendance at St. Elizabeth's Church on August 21. Three new members admitted to King Philip Steam Fire Engine Company and hand engine practice set for next Monday. Défiance Hose Company to host Labor Day clam bake with orchestra and dancing 1.30 to 3.30. Hydraulion Engine and Hose Company welcomed one membership proposal. Bristol Veteran Fireman Association will not attend Marblehead muster on August 19. Dreadnaught Hook Ladder Hose Company plans a moonlight excursion August 24 and attendance at the St. Elizabeth's Church fair on August 21.

Official Change of Name in Phoenix Columns

In Phoenix advertising pages an official notice records George Emil Liebreich changing his name to George Edward Leighton. Liebreich, longtime Cranston Worsted Malls superintendent, was born in England with German ancestors. His family, including his mother, changed to Leighton by London court decree for national and business reasons. He will keep the nickname George, while the surname Liebreich becomes Leighton, pronounced Teeton.
