Costa Sent to Sockanosset by Judge Lindemuth

Alfred Costa aged 18 of 513 Wood Street was ordered sent to Sockanosset School by Judge Benjamin F Lindemuth at the Fifth District Court session in Warren on charges of breaking and entering and driving off an automobile. Police Capt George W. Lewis said Costa broke into a shed on July 20 and stole a gasoline water pump valued at $210 and drove off a Wallace Motor Sales Company car that night.

Girl Scouts Head to Camp Hoffman and White Mountain

Four members return Sunday and four depart Monday for Camp Hoffman in South County for two weeks. Balzano and Taves leave for Kingston camp. replacements arrive August 20. Houstis and Mathewson will spend two weeks at White Mountain camp in Jefferson Heights New Hampshire.

County tennis tournament starts tomorrow

The Bristol County Championship Tennis Tournament opens tomorrow at 2 pm at the Excelsior Club court with men’s singles and junior events beginning in the morning. Bristol men prep for 15 day tour at Camp Green

Eight Bristol residents of Company E 118th Combat Engineers sail tomorrow for a 15 day duty tour at Camp Green Quonset Point Rhode Island under Capt George Green. They will join in bridge building entrenchments machine gun positions fortifications gas warfare and patrols. August 12 is visitors day and Bristol residents expect to tour the camp.

Ed Leahy Jr Chosen to Represent Bristol Yacht Club

Edward L. Leahy Jr son of Judge and Mrs Edward L. Leahy is named junior skipper for Bristol Yacht Club in the Narragansett Bay Boys Union Championship at Watch Hill Sunday. He sails a Herreshoff 15 with crew Eric Reed and Paul Nicholson. The winner may enter Atlantic Coast Union races in Connecticut early next month. The club plans a girls crew for Wickford races toward the Narragansett Bay championship with Cohasset Mass competition on August 23 for the Mrs Charles Francis Adams trophy. The local crew has won Bay championship the past two years.

Shoe Company to Begin Hiring Hundreds for New Plant

The Paramede Shoe Company moving from Haverhill Mass to Bristol starts reviewing hundreds of labor applications received through the Bristol Phoenix office. It aims to hire local workers first with minimal out of town staff, targeting leather shoe makers for its new medium priced women’s shoe factory. The plant plans to employ three to four hundred workers, aided by the Bristol Taxpayers’ Association.

Tiverton youth held on motor vehicle infractions bail

John Reposa 21 of 241 Stafford road Tiverton is charged with driving without a license and failing to slow at an intersection. Bail set at 500 each, released until Monday when he faces Judge Lindemuth in Fifth District Court. The arrest followed a chase in Tiverton after a car eluded officers and was abandoned on McKenzie avenue. Police found the vehicle and traced ownership.

Police Help in manhunt for Arthur Lemieux escapee

State and local police aid the search for 29 year old Arthur Lemieux who escaped from State Prison Tuesday morning while working in the piggery. He is described as five feet seven inches tall with chestnut hair and brown eyes. Lemieux fled by swimming the Pawtuxet river and hiding in nearby woods. Guards searched river banks and nearby Hillsgrove after reports of sightings in prison uniform. Lemieux, sentenced June 2 1932 for attempted criminal assault, had recently earned trusty status for good behavior.

The Italian All Stars led by Phillip Sansone face Alphonese Rebello’s Portuguese All-Stars in game two at the common.
