Death of James Hoard Jr Chief of Police

James Hoard Jr died Tuesday at 1 30 p m at his Hope street residence after about a year long illness. He served as police chief since October 1 1866 and earlier was a member of the Night Watch from 1866 to 1881. He bade farewell to Sheriff Philo V Cady Town Clerk Herbert F Bennett and other friends before passing.

Bristol Leader Hoard Served as Chief of Police and Town Sergeant

The long-serving Bristol official, born February 28 1848, led the police as chief from 1881 and previously as Town Sergeant from 1867, surviving Civil War service with the Seventh Rhode Island Volunteers. He died at 64, leaving a wife Mary DeCosta and children James, Walter, George, Mabel and siblings, while also holding roles in G A R and Royal Arcanum.
