Town Meeting Agenda Totaling 127935 Presented Tonight

Tonight adjourned town meeting agenda totals 127935 dollars with 109900 for sewers 14700 for roads 835 for a pension and 2500 requested for a sanitary engineering survey of the sewage disposal plant needs. Also listed are rezonings of town land at Hope and Gooding avenues including a lease request by First National Stores and use of 4000 remaining from an earlier appropriation to improve State Street wharf for a supermarket. Rezoning actions cover land north of Gooding Ave junction of Hope and Thames Streets and land owned by William A Rego and Joseph G Rego on Meta com Ave west side.

Taxpayers OK Council Budget and Teacher Raises

Town meeting adjourned after approving a budget of over $1.3 million with 599 voters present. The council budget passed with no changes while the budget committee's long term lease proposal was defeated. A heated debate over teacher salaries and school funding followed, including a paper ballot on certain school budget cuts.

First National Leases Town Land For Ten Years

Council President William P. Sousa will report that First National Stores offers to lease 10 acres at Hope St and Gooding Ave for ten years at 4500 per year, rising to 5000 after year ten, with the company clearing the land and erecting a 150000 building at its own expense. The town would gain rental income and about 2220 yearly tax, with building reverting to the town if the lease ends.

U S S Bristol To Visit Here On Armed Forces Day

The U S S Bristol a destroyer well known locally will visit the town on Armed Forces Day May 17 the Navy announced yesterday The ship has made several prior visits on Armed Forces Day and the Fourth of July in past years Arrangements are complete and representatives of the ship will be in town today and tomorrow to make necessary provisions.

Rocket Class Invited To New York Weekend Press Conference

The Bristol Rocket Class receives a second invitation from First Army Headquarters at Governors Island to attend a press conference on Saturday May 3. A prior invitation invited a rockets and design symposium in New York City from 1 to 5 p.m. Cars and drivers may be provided by volunteers to accommodate more than the initial 16 boys, with transportation costs shared by the group.

Lights Increase Being Considered in Bristol Legislation

Bristol state lawmakers planned to introduce a $150 boost to an ongoing Christmas decorations appropriation bringing the Chamber of Commerce town funds to $1,000. The House and Senate also moved to approve liquidation of the Bristol Teachers Retirement Fund, allowing withdrawals and dissolution by court action. Sen. Gladys M Brightman sponsors the measure and it heads to the Governor. Delyn P Crowley seeks $176.92 for damages after a collision with a state owned truck.

Lady Democrats Tour Vets Home

Members of the Women’s Democratic Club toured the R. J. Veterans' Home during their meeting last week. Initial plans were discussed for a mystery ride in June. Mrs. David J. Ferris was named chairman, assisted by Mrs. Joseph Gallagher and Mrs. Edward Pontes. Donations were voted to the Easter Seals and Heart Fund.
