War Ended as Ratifications Exchanged and Diplomacy Moves

The long US Spain war ended with ratifications exchanged on Tuesday restoring peace. President McKinley proclaimed the war over and Bellamy Storer was named the next US Minister to Spain. A peace treaty was signed in December 1894 but ratification only occurred now. Rumor links Mayor Carter Harrison of Chicago to a Bryan ticket as vice president.

Torpedo boat Morris visits Herreshoffs and Parker mill plans

The torpedo boat Morris arrived Tuesday afternoon from Newport with Commander George A Converse aboard. He is now stationed in Washington D C and toured the Herreshoff shops. Converse formerly helped build torpedo boats and lived on State Street. He commanded the cruiser Montgomery in the recent war. Parker Mill Company of Fall River buys Warren land for a large mill and plans a major facility with three attractions. The deal includes $800 property, rail access, and 10 years tax exemption. Capital stock was raised from 500000 to 800000 at a Wednesday meeting.

Bristol Ferry lighthouse keeper burns hands firefighting blaze

Edward Sherman, lighthouse keeper at Bristol Ferry, suffered painful burns to his hands Sunday evening while extinguishing a curtain fire in the lighthouse.
