A new sport Wheel-Ball debuts Sunday April 27 at the Rhode Island Armory Metacom Ave with two teams of four players and two goalies per side. The ball is hit only by bicycles and bodily contact with the ball is a foul. Sponsors Robert Whaling and William Rego envision a Montreal premiere next month.
Gov. Roberts signed several Bristol measures this week including a Fourth of July Committee use of the State Armory on Metacom Ave for a July 3 dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A pension to Alphonse Rebello not to exceed 1100 was authorized, and a $200 War WWII bonus for John Souza approved. Additional Brightman resolutions covered deaths of Brig. Gen. Samuel Alton Hall and Miss Jeanette Cecile Mailloux.
The State Division of Harbors and Rivers proposes dredging 11 acres of Mill Pond to six feet mean low water depth to form a small boat basin linking Bristol Harbor. A 60 foot wide horizontal clearance bridge over Poppasquash Road with 12 feet vertical clearance at mean high water would be built, and Poppasquash Road elevated about 900 feet each side. Estimated total cost: 380000 dollars, with 150000 for dredging, 155000 for bridge, and 75000 for approaches.
The Chamber of Commerce races to host Columbia Pictures location scouts for Wreck of the Old 97 in Bristol. A 1903 Danville Virginia wreck song inspired project as officials pledge full cooperation and plan welcome activities while also debating Christmas street lighting and a Common exhibit.
Zoning Board last night voted to recommend a zone change to industrial for 187 acres between Metacom Ave and Franklin St extension. Petitioners plan sewer water, a building for pre cut home components, and possibly a small tool factory with about 25 jobs. A buffer strip and a future extension to Metacom Ave are part of the plan, with ongoing questions about zoning violations at adjacent properties.
