Cancer Crusade Launched Today

The 1958 Cancer Crusade begins this day and runs through April designated Cancer Control Month. Local chairman Mrs Gilbert C Hoover announces campaign captains for residential and district efforts, listing numerous captains and coordinators across neighborhoods and organizations.

Trucker Moran Killed in Metacom Ave Crash

William Patrick Moran aged 32 of 120 Papineau Ave Woonsocket died when his truck collided head on with a parked oil tanker near Lou's Spa on Metacom Ave opposite the Rhode Island Veterans Home. The crash occurred at 7 05 AM. eyewitness Frank B McGuirk of Cranston reported Moran failed to avoid the collision. Moran's truck owned by Serventine of Diamond Hill Cumberland was destroyed and burned. body removed by Dr Ralph Petrucci. Bristol police officers John J Sylvia Frank J Almeida and Joseph T Teixeira investigated.

Two Youths Admit Break In at Windy Wall’s Restaurant

A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old minor confessed to breaking into Windy Wall’s on Metacom Ave Sunday night. Swansea Police turned them over to Bristol police. In a Fifth District Court session, James Panzarella 27 Magnolia St was charged with larceny, pleaded guilty, and fined 100 dollars plus costs. The minor was released to parents and referred to Juvenile Court. They admitted stealing 20.05 dollars from a juke box and a cigarette vending machine. the money was found in a bag in Panzarella’s car.

Councilmen Pay Raised to 750 by Charter Panel

The Charter Commission accepted the final draft on the powers of the Town Council with an amendment boosting Councilmen's pay from 300 to 750 annually. The vote, 2 in favor of the raise by Mr. Pigeon and 1 against, included debate on whether School Committee members should be paid. Judge Frank L. Martin led opposition to keeping pay low, while discussion on political party affiliation for officers continued. The pay change will stand until the next ordinary ordinance and cannot be altered during this Council’s term.

Times A Wasting Action on Charter Draft Urged

Charter Commission chairman Anthony Da Ponte urged immediate work on drafting the charter noting enough material exists while others, including Frank T Canario, warned portions remain undiscussed. The committee debated staffing drafts, with calls for two men to work quickly and reports to guide the process.
