Bristol town council elected Henry W Peterson president pro tem and then permanent president at the Tuesday session. Christian A Ostby was elected to fill the unexpired council term and sworn in after the death of Patrick McGovern. Eugene LeClair was named superintendent of streets in a special meeting. The council approved a condolence resolution for McGovern and adjourned to honor the late leader.
D A R chapters held a Tuesday night colonial party at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet with Bristol chapter officials serving on reception and provision booths. An onstage pageant featured historical figures from the Revolutionary era led by a town crier and closed with a grand minuet danced by local students.
Four local volunteer fire companies held their monthly meetings to discuss cooperation with the Independence Day committee for a muster as part of the Independence Day sesquicentennial. Committees were named to coordinate the event and a condolence letter was authorized for the late Capt Patrick McGovern’s son.
On April 13, Tuesday evening, Peter Collins of Boston National Lecturer of the Knights of Columbus will speak on What We Need in America Today. The event targets civic interest and community discussion in a public forum.
