Bristol citizens learn two local men are prisoners of war in Germany Major Charles A Serbst M C son of Mrs Mary E Serbst 617 Hope Street and Pfc Manuel C Silvia husband of Mrs Elizabeth Alves Silvia 634 Wood Street. Serbst a surgeon served in the invasion of North Africa Sicily and Normandy and was last heard from December 22 in Luxembourg.

Pfc Manuel Silvia Reported Prisoner of War in Germany

Private first class Manuel C Silvia, missing in action since December 16, is now a prisoner of war in Germany per a January 25 card from him to his wife Elizabeth at 634 Wood Street. He has been overseas since October and serves in an infantry unit. his brother John Silvia serves in Europe.

Private first class David P J Sanderson US Marine Corps Reserve husband of Mrs Gertrude Belmore Sanderson of 65 Court Street Bristol was killed in action on Iwo Jima March 2 a telegram to his wife said a letter would follow he would have turned 20 this month He served three years in the Marines and had been stationed at Newport since last September He and his wife wed June 14 1944 He left for overseas duty in December and last wrote February 12 from a transport bound for Iwo Jima He was a native of Upper Darby Pennsylvania His wife with her mother in law at 330 South Flower Street Los Angeles Calif Her parents are Cpl and Mrs Arthur J Belmore

George H. Murray Jr. of Bristol Rhode Island has been selected as Unit Master at Arms for Berea College V-12 unit in Berea Kentucky. Officers are chosen for leadership and discipline duties based on academics and experience. Murray, a Colt Memorial High School graduate, joined Berea in November.

Red Cross Workers Attend Final Meeting and Dinner

Eleven Red Cross campaign workers attended the final report meeting and dinner at the Hotel Biltmore. Chairman R S Bosworth reported Bristol’s total at $8,409.30, about 12.01 percent of the quota, with several individuals listed for additional donations across divisions.

Wounded Soldier Recovering in England After Germany Wound

Staff Sergeant Michael Rudich of 15 Thompson Avenue was wounded by an enemy mortar in the Haertgen Forest Germany and is now recovering at a U S Army general hospital in England. His ward surgeon Captain George E Heels says he recuperates satisfactorily and will return to duty after rehabilitation. Rudich received the Purple Heart. his wife Emily Pospa and two children reside at his home.
